Reporting to the Climate Action and Environment Manager, the Senior Environmental Coordinator is an integral part of the City of Delta’s Climate Action and Environment team in the Corporate Services Department. The work involves extensive contact with other municipal departments and a variety of external agencies within senior governments and the private sector, exercising considerable independence of judgement and action in all aspects of the work. Responsibilities Assist in developing and implementing the City’s environmental programs. Participate in environmental projects and activities related to climate change adaptation. Participate in the review of environmental assessments for major projects. Manage the City’s mosquito control contract. Assist with development and review of environmental bylaws and policies. Coordinate the work of consultants engaged in technical and research projects. Conduct reviews of development applications related to Delta’s Streamside Protection and Regulation Development Permit Area Bylaw, soil deposit permits, Erosion and Sediment Control plans, and contaminated sites. Provide advice to other internal departments regarding environmental regulations and inquiries. Participate in the response to environmental emergencies and liaise with external environmental agencies. Direct and/or participate in environmental investigations. Provide guidance to junior staff. Prepare and monitor the operating budget for the division. May act as staff liaison in a committee of Council. Perform other related duties as required. Qualifications Successful candidates should have a minimum of five (5) years of experience working in a field related to environment or sustainability, including knowledge of environmental spill response procedures, skill in using equipment and instruments used in environmental quality control programs, experience with reviewing development and engineering drawings in relation to environmental concerns, and demonstrated ability to make effective oral presentations and strong writing skills. Registration with the College of Applied Biologists, or plans to apply for registration, is preferred. Registration with the BC Institute of Agrologists or a related professional designation will also be considered. A valid class 5 BC driver’s licence is required. Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s Degree. At least one of the following: Degree or diploma with technical courses in chemistry, biology, ecology or related disciplines. Experience reviewing development applications and/or engineering drawings. Familiarity with municipal, provincial and federal environmental regulations.
