The Graduate School of International Studies at Université Laval, located in Quebec City, Canada, invites applications for a faculty position in teaching global issues. The selected candidate will hold the Teaching Leadership Chair in Global Issues and will work in collaboration with the Faculty of Business Administration.The Chair is dedicated to advancing pedagogical innovation and fostering critical thinking in both teaching and research. Its goal is to train students capable of analyzing the complexity of contemporary international dynamics. The selected candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping the school’s academic programs, producing knowledge in the field of international studies, and developing innovative teaching practices that benefit not only students, but also professionals, institutions, and members of the public engaged with global challenges.Global issues encompass a wide range of pressing and interconnected problems that define the landscape of international relations. These include the dynamics, actors, and institutions involved in collective responses to today’s global governance challenges. Areas of expertise sought by the school include, but are not limited to, the following: global health and health security; climate governance, energy, and sustainable development; conflicts below the threshold of war (e.g., cyberattacks, propaganda, subversion, disinformation, sanctions, etc.); international migration and migration policies; transformation of the international order and reform of global institutions.The study of global issues is inherently interdisciplinary and draws on a wide range of theoretical and methodological approaches. It seeks to enhance understanding of the increasing interdependence of societies, as well as the enduring tensions between state sovereignty and the imperative for international cooperation. From a pedagogical standpoint, the Chair will use innovative and cutting-edge techno-pedagogical tools to help students engage more effectively with complex global phenomena.A research advisor will support the co-chairs in developing, planning, and submitting research grant applications, while also ensuring the Chair’s outreach activities are maximized. A budget will also be allocated to provide doctoral scholarships associated with the Chair.The Graduate School of International Studies is recognized as a center of excellence in multidisciplinary research and teaching on international issues. Its mission is to contribute to the advancement of knowledge on global issues and to train highly specialized professionals capable of understanding, debating, and acting on the international stage. Our specialists, from 12 different disciplines, work on various international issues, such as international trade, the environment, security, migration, geopolitics, global health, agribusiness, development, democratization, conflicts, and many other subjects.Duties include:Teaching at the graduate level;Supervising master’s essays, dissertations and doctoral theses;Conducting research and publishing in the field of science diplomacy;Participating in School-related pedagogical and administrative activities;Being involved in any other activity provided for in the Université Laval-SPUL collective agreement;Selection criteria:Ability to teach in French within three years of appointment.Advanced proficiency in quantitative methods, including data analysis; experience with experimental methods is considered an asset;A PhD in a field relevant to global issues;Applications from doctoral candidates nearing the completion of their dissertation will be considered, provided a letter from the department chair confirms the expected date of submission or defense;Demonstrated strong commitment to pluri-/interdisciplinarity, whether through academic background, research program, teaching experience, or collaborative projects;An excellent research record, with publications in top peer-reviewed journals in the candidate’s field, or strong potential to develop such a record for early-career applicants;University-level teaching experience, ideally supported by evaluations;A proven track record of securing research funding from recognized granting agencies, or strong potential to obtain such funding in the near future;Ability to teach a graduate-level methodology course;Proven integration into international research networks is considered an asset;Strong interest in collaborative work;Employment conditions:Regular full-time position;Salary based on recognized experience with benefits in accordance with the Université Laval-SPULcollective agreement (available in French only)How to applyApplications:Starting date: June 1, 2026The application file must include:A cover letter demonstrating the candidate’s commitment to pluri/interdisciplinarity and international issues;A document of no more than two pages outlining a proposed five-year teaching chair program, including pedagogical and methodological approaches to teaching and research dissemination;Candidates on the short list of successful applicants will be required to provide three letters of recommendation from respondents outside Université Laval.
