This role is also responsible for providing customer service to the public, responding to all incidents, and carrying out other duties as required in the provision of transit service. Primary responsibilities Employee Development: Oversees transit operations during shift, verifies processes and ensures personnel are trained, certified, competent, and fit for duty; leads, mentors, coordinates, and directs daily activities of Transit personnel, bringing any appropriate employment matters to the attention of the Assistant Manager, Transit Operations/Assistant Manager, Transit Planning, and/or delegate. Communicates information, processes, and requirements to Transit personnel in the field in person, over the phone, radio or via other transit technologies. Responsible for developing and ensuring the delivery of toolbox talks and safety meetings. Service Delivery: Coordinates and monitors the delivery of all transit operations to ensure services are provided in a safe, efficient, and timely manner. Manages daily service changes on the road and responds to transportation requests, issues, and concerns. Responds to all incidents immediately and conducts incident investigations as required. Collects data and prepares daily summaries on all activities and escalates concerning operator and service-related complaints and compliments. Performs routine foot patrols at terminals and other facilities. Responsible for scheduling Transit Operators in accordance with collective bargaining provisions. Maintains daily dispatch log and statistical information. Uses a variety of transit technologies to monitor route and employee performance. Departmental Coordination: Ensures compliance with rules, regulations, collective agreement, policies, and procedures. Ensures timely and accurate completion of reports and ensures compliance with federal, provincial, and municipal regulations. Records all relevant service-related impacts including passenger counts, service frequencies, and routing recommendations. Coordinates with emergency services when required and responds to emergency activations from the Regional Emergency Coordination Centre. Skills Requirements Knowledge of transit systems, fare structures, collective agreements, and operational policies and procedures. Good knowledge of workplace safety practices and of the transportation of mobility devices. Knowledge of radio and telephone equipment and radio communication procedures. Sound knowledge of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo service area with good knowledge of street names and major landmarks. Strong interpersonal and customer service skills and experience in dealing with public inquiries. Ability to empower people and navigate situations involving rapid change, shifting priorities, and/or simultaneous demands. Strong leadership skills with ability to take initiative and to provide guidance and support to team members. High level of professionalism, ability to be discreet and handle confidential information. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written. Strong customer service skills and experience in dealing with public inquiries. Sound, practical judgement, and independent decision-making skills. Knowledge of all equipment and processes used in transit operations. Good knowledge of computers with working knowledge in Windows and Microsoft Office. Ability to maintain effective working relationships. Education High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required. Completed course work in collision/incident investigation from a recognized institute is considered an asset. Valid First Aid/CPR Certificate is an asset. Completion of a defensive driving course is an asset. An equivalent combination of education and work experience may be considered. Experience Two (2) years of experience in a public transit operations environment. One (1) year of experience in a leadership role, with experience as a supervisor in a unionized environment considered an asset. Experience operating heavy equipment (Class 1, 2 or 3) and knowledge of National Safety Code Regulations considered an asset. Experience working in a public sector environment with unionized and non-unionized employees considered an asset. Other Requirements Submission of a Criminal Record Check. A valid Class Five (5) Operator’s License is required as incumbent will be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business use on a regular basis. A valid Class Two (2) driver’s licence with Q endorsement is considered an asset. Must be willing to work outside in all conditions. Immunizations are strongly recommended for work in unsanitary conditions. Must be medically and physically able to perform all duties of the position on an ongoing basis. Ability to work a rotating shift that includes holidays, evening/night shift, and weekends.
