We are seeking a Senior Director, Tax to join our team in Toronto or Winnipeg.

The Senior Director of Tax will oversee all Canadian income tax and commodity tax planning, reporting, compliance, and analysis, in addition to managing tax audits for People Corporation and its subsidiaries. This role will lead all tax-related matters affecting the company's operations and will be responsible for maintaining tax relationships with external auditors, advisors, and taxation authorities.

The Senior Director, Tax will:
  1. Act as the tax lead for all business units and serve as the liaison between business units, the Executive team, the Ownership group, and other functional teams.
  2. Collaborate with Corporate Development, Finance, and Legal, to lead the acquisition tax process by identifying objectives, consulting with stakeholders, identifying critical success factors, participating in negotiations, reviewing deal documents, reviewing underlying calculations (working capital, purchase price, etc.), undertake detailed technical tax research and documentation, plan for pre- and post-acquisition structuring, lead the tax integration function following close, and monitor overall groupwide tax efficiency.
  3. Collaborate with Finance and Accounting, to lead the operational tax process by overseeing the quarterly and annual income tax provisions, federal and provincial tax returns (both income and indirect), including documentation of tax positions taken and compliance with all CRA mandatory disclosure and uncertain tax treatments rules, manage tax authority audits, manage cash taxes through regular income tax forecasting, manage and monitor (in conjunction with outside advisors) existing tax planning strategies currently in place, and assess operational tax impact of recent M&A activity and/or internal corporate reorganizations.
  4. Provide mentorship and guidance to your tax team on a regular basis.
  5. Provide guidance to all business units on a recurring and ad hoc basis.
  6. Develop and maintain strong relationships with external advisors to ensure that People Corporation has access to the best advice and guidance.
  7. Undertake special projects as required.
To be successful as a Senior Director, Tax with People Corporation, you will need:
  1. Chartered Professional Accountant designation or LL.B. or J.D.
  2. In-depth Tax – Levels I to III.
  3. In-depth Tax – Advanced Corporate Reorganizations.
  4. Minimum 10 years’ experience in Canadian income tax, focusing on mid-market private companies and private equity-owned businesses, preferably from industry or a Big 4 accounting/tax firm.
  5. Strong knowledge of insurance, group benefits, and retirement services.
  6. Extensive experience in acquisition-focused, growth-oriented businesses, including tax due diligence, pre-acquisition structuring, vendor negotiations, and post-closing structuring.
  7. Deep understanding of leveraged buyout and equity acquisition models, including complex financing structures and debt instruments.
  8. Familiarity with international tax, particularly non-resident ownership, cross-border acquisitions, transfer pricing, and foreign accrual property income.
  9. Proven track record in tax planning, managing controversies, and ensuring compliance for income tax, indirect tax, and transfer pricing.
  10. Demonstrated experience in technical tax research, M&A tax planning, and project management.
  11. Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to produce compelling content quickly and effectively.
  12. Strong understanding of indirect tax issues related to Selected Listed Financial Institutions.
  13. Significant experience in resolving income and indirect tax disputes with federal and provincial authorities, including negotiations and settlements.
  14. Proven ability to lead tax support for corporate initiatives from inception through execution, including collaboration with external auditors.
  15. Ability to build strong cross-functional relationships across Tax, Legal, Finance, Treasury, HR, and business lines.
  16. Demonstrated leadership experience in managing a high-performing team, fostering motivation and engagement among team members, and ensuring their success. A hands-on approach with a willingness to actively support both the team and overall functions is essential.
