The Senior Data Scientist is a strong contributor to the Biometric Assumptions Team, providing analytical expertise for the global development of data‑driven solutions in longevity product development and pricing. The role combines technical skills and predictive modelling to contribute to innovative model solutions and collaborates on project‑teams consisting of data scientists, actuaries, IT, and business developers. Responsibilities Lead, design, create, and interpret end‑to‑end models focused on mortality within longevity markets. Support the Pricing team with insights from large datasets and aid the adoption of robust bespoke assumptions in quotes. Evaluate new external data sources and explore new applications of non‑traditional data for RGA across its regions. Participate in the development and enhancement of underlying processes, recommending improvements in data analysis and modeling best practices. Communicate with stakeholders at various levels of seniority. Apply risk management skills to any data processing or modeling exercise. Understand business context and where material scope for error lies. Adhere to professional standards, best practices, and ethical guidelines. Understand strengths and limitations of different modeling approaches. Leverage actuarial knowledge while applying advanced tools and techniques. Apply rigorous applications, risk assessment, transparency, quality assurance, peer review, and ethical guidelines. Stay abreast of new techniques with a focus on practical applications. Liaise with RGA’s data scientists globally on sophisticated data science applications. Contribute to RGA’s global analytics community, sharing insights and maintaining consistency of approach. Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Math, Finance, Economics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Computer Science or related field. 6+ years of experience developing statistical models (Regression, Decision Trees, Time Series, etc.). Proficiency in R or Python. Spreadsheet skills (Excel/VBA) and database experience (SQL, Snowflake, Oracle, etc.). Advanced predictive modeling skills – Tree‑based models, GLMs, GAMs, cross‑validation, residuals, and diagnostics. Advanced exploratory data analysis skills – Plots and graphics (BI/ggplot). Ability to compile, analyze, refine, model, and interpret very large data sets, incorporating expert judgment into statistical modeling. Possess advanced feature engineering skills to transform data for predictive value. Translate business needs and problems into viable, accepted solutions. Advanced investigative, analytical, and problem‑solving skills. Preferred Experience with longevity product design, pricing, experience studies, or assumption development. Reinsurance industry experience. Master’s degree or PhD in Statistics, Actuarial Science, Economics, or related field. 4+ years of experience with statistical modeling for insurance. Familiarity with actuarial modeling platforms (AXIS, Prophet, Exp Studies, etc.). Basic data engineering capabilities (Python, Scala). Basic machine learning models or concepts (SVMs, GANs, Neural Networks, Naive Bayes, NLP) and feature engineering for dimensionality reduction (PCA, SVD, clustering). Proactive use of insurance expertise & actuarial concepts in feature engineering and model evaluation. Compensation Range $131,100 – $163,900 CAD Annual.
