Claims Specialist – Personal Lines (Zurich Insurance) Based in Montreal, Waterloo or Calgary, reporting to the Claims Manager, Auto Personal Lines. Job Overview Zurich Canada seeks a Claims Specialist to handle single and multi‑party personal or commercial line claims of low to moderate exposure and complexity. The role requires following established protocols to resolve claims efficiently while delivering a customer‑centric service. Key Responsibilities Document claims file by accurately capturing and updating claims data in compliance with best practices. Determine liability by gathering facts, applying relevant law, and establishing negligence principles. Perform policy verification and coverage determination, establishing whether the loss falls within the policy limits. Develop case strategy and evaluation, escalating issues as appropriate to achieve timely resolutions. Establish timely reserves and perform ongoing review throughout the claims cycle within authority limits. Assess damages by calculating applicable amounts or ranges allowed by law. Negotiate settlement by developing strategy and using available tools within authority limits, meeting quality standards. Maintain customer service through proactive communication, responding to inquiries, and participating in customer marketing efforts. Manage expenses by working within approved vendor networks and controlling contractor scope, seeking manager approval only where necessary. Ensure legal compliance with state and federal laws, regulations, and internal controls. Refer claims to subrogation and fraud teams when indicated. Contribute to profitable growth by providing risk insight, trends, and information to the Business Unit or customer. Maintain professional knowledge by pursuing educational opportunities and staying current with industry trends. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree and 2+ years in Claims or Insurance (or equivalent). Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with Associate Degree and 2+ years in Claims (or equivalent). High School Diploma or Equivalent with 4+ years in Claims or Insurance. Completion of Zurich Claims Training Program with 1+ year Claims experience. Must obtain and maintain required adjuster license(s). Proficiency in Microsoft Office. Knowledge of insurance regulations, markets, and products. Prior experience in auto claims handling or related customer service field. Preferred Skills Bilingual in English and French. Effective verbal and written communication. Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem‑solving skills. Excellent time management, prioritization, and multitasking. Team collaboration and cross‑functional relationship building. Ability to explain complex financial and actuarial concepts. Understanding of reserving process for indemnity and expense. Negotiation strategy development and execution.
