Corporal, Peace Officer, Protective Services Summary The corporal provides supervision to peace officers to ensure congruence between platoons for current, upcoming, and ongoing situations. As a supervisor, the corporal coaches, mentors, and provides guidance to the team to ensure proper application and execution of established policies and practices. Other key responsibilities include communicating changes in policy, procedures or relevant legislation, and monitoring the quality of services provided by the patrol branch within the department and externally. As a working supervisor, the corporal will perform the duties of a peace officer when required and may be required to operate in an incident command role in the event of an emergency. Duties and Responsibilities Supervises, coaches, guides, and mentors a team of peace officers in the performance of their duties including monitoring and maintaining daily staffing levels, reviewing and approving timesheets, and acting as a resource in supporting conflict engagement and resolution Plans and communicates the day-to-day operational workflow and directives to peace officers and platoons, appropriately balancing time and services between community engagement and enforcement Provides a wide range of reactive and proactive public safety services including resolution, problem solving, crime prevention, investigation, crisis intervention and enforcement of university regulations and provincial and federal statutes Reviews processes and procedures, making recommendations for improvement and supporting the implementation of changes Monitors the quality of summary offence tickets, administrative documentation, and incident reports and activities, ensuring investigative steps are exhausted and that proper follow-up with victims is performed Provides training, development, feedback and assessment to platoon members Communicates with platoon members regarding their roles and responsibilities during emergency situations Monitors for adherence to equipment guidelines and that all facilities are clean and in proper working condition Responds to events in progress, health incidents, traffic collisions, alarms, campus events, disasters, emergencies, or other situations which require intervention Initiates investigations resulting from complaints, assigned files, or observation of activity, gathering and processing intelligence through field interviews and observation Applies investigative procedures such as gathering information, interviewing witnesses and suspects, taking statements, seizing evidence, requesting specialized services, and concluding investigations Enforces federal and provincial laws, and university bylaws, processes arrests, prepares cases, and presents evidence in court Addresses and problem-solves immediate conditions that give rise to public safety issues such as crime, social disorder, and fear of crime Performs patrol functions such as attending complaints, executing warrants, investigating suspicious persons and activities, obtaining and recording information relevant to assigned duties, and performing traffic enforcement Provides qualitative advice and support to victims Builds relationships and partnerships with community members to understand their needs Completes and submits required reports promptly and accurately Conducts assigned duties and patrols using bicycles, on foot, or in marked vehicles Participates in special projects to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit Communicates and acts in a respectful and professional manner, collaborates effectively, abides by policy, and contributes to a positive and productive work and learning environment Engages in continuous learning by participating in activities, training, and events related to Indigenous engagement, reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusion Demonstrates respect and dignity for all members of the community, actively contributes to an environment of acceptance and inclusion of others, and responds to different perspectives from a place of curiosity, respect, and non-judgement Undertakes related duties, as assigned, consistent with the nature of the position Education A certificate or diploma in policing, sociology, psychology or a related field; a bachelor’s degree is preferred. Licenses A valid class 5 driver’s license. Certification in CPR First-Aid Level C. Certification in Verbal Judo, Conflict De‑Escalation, and Defensive Tactics is preferred. Experience Minimum of three years’ experience in law enforcement, security, or related field. Previous supervisory experience directing, instructing, coaching and mentoring a team. Successful completion of the Police Officer Physical Abilities Test (POPAT) or equivalent is mandatory. Skills Sound judgement, critical thinking, and decision‑making skills. Strong interpersonal and communications skills including clear verbal articulation, writing, and listening skills. Ability to remain professional, composed, and organized under pressure or in high‑stress situations. High degree of professionalism and integrity. Ability to work independently, take initiative, and multi‑task efficiently and effectively. Capacity to coach, guide, and instruct new peace officers in departmental operations. Ability to build relationships and work effectively and collaboratively with a team. Proficiency with technology and can easily adapt to technological changes.
