Position Summary The City of Penticton’s Recreation Department is in search of a highly motivated and energetic individual for the permanent position of Recreation Coordinator – McLaren & Sport Facilities. The Recreation Department promotes and contributes to a healthy community and enhances the quality of life for Penticton residents and visitors through planning, management and delivery of recreation, sports events and active living opportunities. Reporting to the Recreation Business Supervisor, the Recreation Coordinator supports the City’s strategic direction in recreation and sport programming. The Recreation Coordinator is responsible for bookings and coordination of programs at various indoor and outdoor City facilities including McLaren Arena and outdoor sport fields. This role is part of the Recreation Department team responsible for delivery of recreation sport events and active living opportunities. Key Duties & Responsibilities Coordinate and book sports and events at City sport fields, McLaren Arena and other designated indoor and outdoor facilities as required. Create and adapt sport rental contracts and associated rental costs using Xplor Recreation software. Coordinate supplies, equipment and facilities required for bookings including scheduling for washrooms, field lights etc. Communicate and build relationships with user groups and members of the public, internal City departments and external contractors and suppliers. Responsible for hiring, training, scheduling and overseeing seasonal staff at McLaren Arena while ensuring the accuracy and effective operation of the point‑of‑sale system. Respond to relevant booking inquiries and provide quotes, information and availability as necessary. Develop and coordinate City recreation programming areas as required including McLaren Arena. Work with Recreation Coordinators to resolve any conflicting booking requests at outdoor facilities. Provide support and backup coverage for the Recreation Coordinators as needed. Provide required program and promotional information for other assigned areas of responsibility for Recreation guide news releases radio announcements social media etc. Assist in preparing budgets for review and approval, monitor approved budget expenditures, compile program and facility statistics and prepare reports and correspondence. Required Knowledge, Abilities & Skills Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and objectives of community recreation. Exceptional organizational and communication skills. Ability to work a variety of hours which may include evenings and weekends. Exceptional oral and written communication skills. Ability to take initiative, exercise good judgement and to work independently in the development, coordination and implementation of programs and events. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Knowledge of Recreation Software (Xplor Recreation) will be considered an asset. Proven experience overseeing staff and volunteers of various skill levels ensuring effective team performance. Ability to demonstrate professionalism. Ability to exhibit leadership, maintain control and exercise discipline with tact and diplomacy in all situations. Education, Training & Experience Minimum 2‑year diploma in Recreation/Leisure Services or a related discipline at a recognized institution. Minimum two to four years demonstrated sport event or project management experience or equivalent combination of events managed. Valid BC Driver’s License – Minimum Class 5. Competition # 25-120 Summer Programming Assistant – London, Ontario Under the general supervision of and reporting to the Public Programming and Education Coordinators, the Summer Programming Assistant (student position) is responsible for the interpretation of the heritage village and the delivery of public programs, special events, timed‑activities, and guided tours. This is a youth position. Youth must be eligible under the terms and conditions of the Summer Employment Opportunities requirements. Eligibility & Terms All students must be currently enrolled in a secondary or post‑secondary institution or within six months of graduation and have reached the age of 15. Proof of student enrolment must be provided to the employer. Students must be residents of Ontario during the period of employment. Students must be eligible to work in Canada and have a Social Insurance Number (SIN). Eligibility to work is verified prior to the start of employment. Hours / Days of Work From approximately July 14, 2024 through End of August, 2024 – 9:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Term & Salary 30 days of work, up to full‑time seasonal, weekends and holidays (Mondays required). Salary: Grade 1 $16.55. Reporting To Public Programming Coordinator and Education Coordinator. Duties and Responsibilities Interpret to visitors through the implementation of an approved plan of daily demonstrations and activities for public programming (domestic, foodways, and agricultural). Interpret to visitors through demonstrations. Coordinate demonstrations for daily presentation to the public in relation to, and as scheduled by, the annual public programming plan. Complete assigned special tasks that relate to your area of interpretation as assigned. Assist with public programming and event set up and clean up. Work in a team environment. Maintain a high level of customer service and meet safety standards. Deliver special themed events and programs. Assist with the training of other staff and volunteers in collaboration with the Public Programming Coordinator or Education Coordinator. Prepare and deliver on‑site, history‑based education programs, summer camps and guided tours as assigned. Demonstrate heritage crafts, trades, foodways and activities to visitors. Perform physical daily program set up, take down, and cleaning procedures. Ensure the safety of visitors, education and summer camp program participants. Assist with building and site cleaning and program maintenance for program areas. Offer support in the Denfield General Store on an as‑needed basis. Support Fanshawe Pioneer Village customer service initiatives. Ensure the safety of visitors and staff and protect the site’s resources. Building cleaning and maintenance. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Physical requirements: ability to lift 20‑30 lbs, walk/ navigate gravel paths and uneven surfaces, work outdoors in environments with air pollutants, tolerate exposure to wildlife, inclement and severe weather. Ability to communicate and interpret effectively to large numbers of people of various ages and backgrounds. Ability and desire to work with children and youth and deliver engaging programming and interactive activities. Demonstrated knowledge of principles and practices used in developing and carrying out a museum interpretive program. Ability to wear historical costumes and adhere to guidelines with respect to jewellery, make‑up and other personal adornment required. Knowledge of 19th‑century south‑western Ontario history an asset. Ability to perform and/or learn skills associated with gardening, farming, hearth cooking, heritage handiwork (e.g., sewing, textiles) and fine arts, 19th and early 20th‑century trades. Ability to learn historical information and interpret to the public in an interactive way (both individual and group settings). Ability to perform and/or learn 19th‑century demonstrations relating to the Fanshawe Pioneer Village interpretive program. Prior retail/customer service experience required. Ability to foster and maintain cooperative working relationships with supervisors, volunteers and other staff. Prior supervisory experience an asset. Excellent organization and communication skills. Ability to work weekends and holidays. Prior experience in a museum or living‑history setting an asset. Fluency in French an asset. Valid driver's licence. Standard first aid and CPR certificate an asset. Must have own transportation. Must be able to provide a Police Information Check and Vulnerable Persons Screening.
