The Associate Registrar, Student Financial Services (SFS) will provide strategic vision, leadership, and overall direction related to the University of Guelph’s management of student accounts and financial aid programs. You will be a key advisor to the Registrar, other University Leaders (Guelph, Guelph-Humber and Ridgetown Campus), and various committees.
The Associate Registrar will lead and direct the implementation of the University of Guelph’s tuition billing and collections processes, and financial aid programs based upon knowledge of contemporary practices and challenges, regularly reassessing accuracy and effectiveness of the unit’s activities, and ensuring that the University’s student account and financial aid initiatives are proactive, strategic, and responsive to the changing landscape of higher education and to the changing needs of students.
As a leader of the Student Financial Services team with 21 FTE, the Associate Registrar will oversee the provision of financial assistance and services to over 35,000 full and part-time students located on Guelph’s campus, at Guelph-Humber, and at Ridgetown. They oversee a departmental budget of $1.6M and administer over $110M in government loans and grants; $51.3M in internal and external scholarships and bursaries; and $2.8M in Work Study funding. They also oversee the billing, collection, and reconciliation of student accounts receivable with an annual billing of over $383M.
The Associate Registrar will provide strategic and operational guidance to partners on the Guelph campus, at Guelph-Humber, and at Ridgetown. In addition, the incumbent provides leadership in benchmarking, innovation, change management, use of technology, and continuous quality improvement, while working with the Institutional Research and Planning and Audit teams to ensure risk is minimized and that all activities comply with generally accepted accounting principles, internal and external reviews and audits, and other regulatory requirements.
Requirements of the position include:
- Undergraduate degree (master’s degree preferred) in Business Management/Administration or a closely related field, and six (6) to nine (9) years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Professional Accounting Designation (C.P.A., C.A., C.M.A.)
- Extensive knowledge of financial planning and analysis, budgeting, and forecasting.
- Advanced understanding of quality standards relative to operational improvement, strategic planning, and business growth.
- Ability to provide strategic analysis and recommendations for designing and implementing new and changing administrative and financial processes.
- Experience including supervising, hiring, training, motivating, and performance management of staff particularly in a unionized environment.
- Experience managing a budget in a fiscally constrained context and in creating and interpreting statistical reports, spreadsheets, and data to formulate a financial aid plan and effectively forecast annual financial aid spending.
- Strong project management and organizational skills with ability to identify and prioritize short and long-term opportunities and challenges.
- Ability to exercise judgment, tact, diplomacy, and discretion, and to make effective decisions with limited data in unclear situations.
