CHEO is a globally recognized health institution dedicated to providing exceptional care and support to children, youth, and their families across a vast region. From Canada's capital to eastern and northern Ontario, western Quebec, and Nunavut, we serve over half a million patients each year.
Forbes has twice named us the best place to work in Canadian healthcare. We are a team of over 6,500 – staff, clinicians, scientists, researchers, and volunteers – all working together to help children and youth thrive.
Since 1974, the world has transformed, and so have the needs of children. CHEO has evolved to address these changes, including comprehensive cardiac care as part of Ontario’s two-site pediatric cardiovascular surgery program with SickKids Hospital in Toronto.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate and monitor CHEO’s perfusion equipment for cardiopulmonary bypass, ECMO, cell saver and related point-of-care technologies.
- Administer medications and blood products to patients through bypass machines.
- Provide on-call coverage to support urgent/emergent surgeries and ECMO initiation/discontinuation.
- Troubleshoot ECMO circuits and provide back-up support for ECMO specialists.
- Monitor and assess patients’ vital signs and physiological functions throughout surgeries to ensure safety.
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other medical professionals to provide optimal patient care.
- Maintain and manage perfusion equipment, ensuring it is in proper working condition.
- Prepare and review patients’ medical histories and notes to plan for surgeries.
- Perform administrative duties, including equipment management, supply purchasing, and quality improvement initiatives.
Qualifications:
- Certified with the Canadian Society of Clinical Perfusion and/or American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
- Graduate of an accredited program in Cardiovascular Perfusion Technology.
- Hands-on clinical experience with pediatric perfusion (preferred).
- Familiarity with key CV Surgery databases including PC4 and STS.
- Demonstrated excellence in communication skills and working in a multidiscipline team environment.
Effective March 29, 2021, CHEO will conduct a more comprehensive pre-screening and evaluation process. This process may include more varied and multidimensional testing such as a written test, practical exam, or other assessment. All candidates who meet the essential and preferred qualifications may be tested.
CHEO values diversity and is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to providing an inclusive and barrier-free work environment, starting with the hiring process and welcome interest from all qualified applicants.
Should you require accommodation during any phase of the recruitment process, please contact Human Resources at jobs@cheo.on.ca. All information received in relation to accommodation will be kept confidential and will be handled in compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.
Bilingualism (French/English) will be validated by a language proficiency assessment conducted by a third-party provider. Candidates will be required to meet the minimum linguistic profile prior to the date of hire.
CHEO is committed to providing a safe environment for staff, patients, and visitors. Consistent with that commitment, all applicants must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to be considered for any staff or volunteer opportunities. Applicants are also strongly encouraged to receive their COVID-19 booster shots when eligible to protect against the spread of COVID-19. Upon hiring, presentation of government-issued documentation confirming full vaccination must be provided, or presentation of supporting documentation of a valid medical contraindication or other reasonable consideration pursuant to the Ontario Human Rights Code.
