Job SummaryThe Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Manager provides strategic project coordination and support for EDI initiatives for the School to foster a respectful learning and work environment and to promote equity, diversity and inclusion. This position identifies Respectful Environments, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (REDI) priorities, raises awareness of power imbalances, bullying and harassment, racism, unequal and inequitable treatment, and all forms of discriminatory attitudes to overcome differences and promote a healthy workplace for all. The EDI Manager, with the SPPH REDI Committee, leads planning, development, delivery and evaluation of proactive and responsive dialogue and conflict transformation initiatives, including workshops, trainings, dialogue spaces, conflict coaching, mediation and restorative group processes. They bring advanced expertise in trauma-informed, relationship-centered and equity-focused approaches to conflict engagement.The role works closely with the Faculty of Medicine (FoM) Office of Respectful Environments, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and the UBC Equity and Inclusion Office to inform decision‑making within SPPH. The EDI Manager establishes relationships across the School and its partners to ensure consistency of practice and adherence to UBC regulations, policies and procedures. The ideal candidate will have lived experience of equity issues and a deep understanding of EDI, and will partner to educate, advise, guide and champion behaviours that support diversity, inclusion, equity and action within the School. Organizational StatusThe EDI Manager works collaboratively with SPPH staff, faculty, students, student organizations, partners internal and external to UBC, and various units within the University. This role reports to the SPPH Director and Associate Director, Education and administratively to the Director of Administration. The incumbent works closely with the MHA Program Director and MHA Program Manager, as well as other SPPH Program Directors and managers as needed. SPPH is housed within the Faculty of Medicine and comprises multiple divisions as described in the original posting. Work Performed EDI Advising and Support Act as an advisor to SPPH leadership, staff, faculty and students to identify and assess needs, and to plan and develop actionable and sustainable organizational change strategies related to embedding equity, diversity, and inclusion across units in SPPH. Provide coaching and advice to staff, faculty and students in collaboration with leadership to build leadership capacity, improve equity and inclusion initiatives, and foster quality improvement. Influence functional strategy by working with senior leadership and the SPPH REDI Committee to develop and implement initiatives within the School, Faculty of Medicine and University strategic plans; contribute to documents framing best practices, standards, processes and resources related to embedding EDI into the School. Lead development of sustainable solutions for projects with knowledge management, governance, community engagement structures, change management, and training needs to ensure long-term organizational change. Build and facilitate relationships among staff, faculty, students, SPPH leadership, service providers, units and external partners to sustain partnerships; collaborate with Indigenous communities following their protocols. Proactively assist in shifting culture through policies, programs, training and procedures; identify governance and process factors affecting implementation of change efforts. Provide reports and updates on change initiatives, including success metrics and options for problem resolution to the SPPH Director and Director of Administration. Perform other duties as required. Mediation and Support Lead restorative processes to address harm, build accountability, and foster reintegration through facilitated dialogue and education. Exercise high judgment and navigate multi-partial perspectives, often with heightened expectations around confidential information. Mediates equity-based conflicts and facilitates conversations across differences, attending to both interpersonal dynamics and structural conditions. SPPH Committee Leadership and Membership Engage with the SPPH REDI Committee, including managing and leading the committee as appropriate. Attend School Management Committee (SMC) meetings as needed. Advise and serve on relevant staff and faculty committees within SPPH (including faculty recruitments) and the University; lead the creation of a community of practice for the School. Participate as a member of FoM and UBC REDI communities of practice/networks. Educational Support Develop, coordinate and facilitate programs and educational initiatives in the School, such as forums, presentations, lectures and workshops related to equity, diversity and inclusion for the SPPH community. Lead and facilitate collaborative processes with academic, administrative and research partners to develop, implement and evaluate diversity and inclusion plans and projects, including: Collaborate with Division Heads and leaders of research centres to assess facilitation and education needs and design interventions. Identify opportunities for advancement, training and development of skills, resources, or materials to strengthen services for diverse students, faculty and staff. Masters of Health Administration (MHA) Program Support Plan and deliver MHA REDI orientation and events, including ongoing workshops for students and faculty. Review MHA curriculum and identify opportunities to advance EDI in course design, content and assessment. Develop resources for MHA instructors to integrate EDI into their curriculum. Plan, test and refine strategies for approaching diversity, equity and inclusion in admissions. Join MHA staff meetings as required and collaborate with other SPPH Program Directors and the Associate Director, Education on similar activities for other SPPH programs. Consequence of Error/JudgementThe EDI Manager works collaboratively within broad guidelines and represents the School when engaging with internal and external partners. The role requires initiative, sound judgment, tact, sensitivity and confidentiality when dealing with faculty, staff and students. Failures could impact the School’s credibility and relationships. The position involves handling personal information under privacy laws and requires adherence to confidentiality policies. SupervisionSupervision Received: The EDI Manager reports to the SPPH Director and Associate Director, Education, and administratively to the Director of Administration. The role collaborates with the MHA Program Director and Manager; work is reviewed against goals.Supervision Given: Supervises temporary and/or student employees; provides orientation, training and guidance to staff, faculty and students on EDI initiatives. QualificationsMinimum Qualifications Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including those that differ from one’s own. Commitment to expanding one’s awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Preferred Qualifications Post-graduate certification in a relevant discipline and several years of specialization in intergroup dialogue, conflict facilitation, restorative justice, mediation, or related practices; health professional environment experience preferred. Fluency in equity-centered frameworks (anti-oppression, critical interculturalism, decolonization, trauma-informed care). Experience delivering EDI education and moving EDI issues forward; ability to design and assess innovative programs. Leadership in developing institutional educational programs related to EDI and dialogue; background in adult education or student development is ideal. Experience working with Indigenous partners and knowledge of human rights, Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action, IN Plain Sight, UNDRIP and related legislation. Strong written and verbal communication, facilitation, analytical thinking, and ability to build rapport with students, staff, faculty and partners. Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills with the ability to implement policies and strategies. High professional judgment and interpersonal skills for confidential situations; ability to manage emotionally charged conversations with empathy. Ability to collaborate across campus and with external partners; ability to develop and sustain partnerships. Proven ability to lead, take direction, and function as a team member.
