Northwords NWT is seeking a highly organized and motivated Executive Director.
About Us
NorthWords NWT is a non-profit organization that supports and promotes northern writers and a literary culture in the NWT. Since 2006, the NorthWords Writers Festival has showcased some of Canada’s finest writers at our signature event, the annual NorthWords Writers Festival. NorthWords NWT is proud to foster the careers of both emerging and established northern writers by offering workshops and hosting events throughout the year.
Duration:
A part-time contract position based in Yellowknife, NT
Hours:
- 15 hours per week from September to June
- 10 hours per month for July and August
- Extended hours, including occasional evenings and weekends, during the festival and other special events throughout the year
Compensation: $40/hr
ResponsibilitiesThe Executive Director supports the NorthWords NWT Board of Directors in achieving our vision and strategic goals by managing the daily operations and activities of the Society, including:
- Following budget and operational timelines to ensure healthy financial practices and sustainable financial security; knowledge of bookkeeping software (Quickbooks) and grant proposal writing is important.
- Preparing for and attending monthly meetings of the Board or special committees, and regularly communicating with the board executive regarding the planning, execution, and administration of the annual NorthWords Writers’ Festival and other events throughout the year in collaboration with the Event Coordinator.
- Other duties, as required.
Our ideal candidate would have the following qualities:
- Experience working with a not-for-profit organization.
- Experience collaborating with and obtaining approvals from a Board of Directors.
- Experience developing successful fundraising and development strategies and planning.
- Knowledge and experience writing and reporting on successful grant proposals to municipal, provincial, and federal funding bodies, as well as private foundations and sponsored funding.
- Exceptional communication skills, including building and maintaining relationships with community arts groups, vendors, and audiences.
- Exceptional organization and time-management skills.
- Self-directed, disciplined, and able to adapt quickly to new and changing deadlines, circumstances, and challenges.
- Knowledge of contemporary writers and the publishing industry in Canada would be useful but is not required.
