Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon (with a specialist interest in Glaucoma) This substantive consultant post will support the service needs of the Glaucoma Ophthalmology service. This will ensure the provision of a high-quality service, with the development and maintenance of standards through clinical audit, evidence-based research and appraisal. The post is based at North Middlesex University Hospital. The team comprises: 1 Glaucoma Consultant, 1 Paediatric Consultant, 2 Medical Retina Consultants & 1 Oculo‑plastic Consultant. Main duties of the job Deliver, develop and lead the Glaucoma service. Support the Ophthalmology unit in achieving its goal of high-quality eye care for the local population of North‑East and East London. Participate actively in clinical trials, research and teaching. Train allied healthcare professionals (AHP) in extended roles. Increase capacity for new glaucoma referrals and for follow‑up patients. Support the development and delivery of a virtual glaucoma service. Provide surgical procedures including glaucoma shunt surgery, trabeculectomies, MIGS surgery and introduce contemporary surgical glaucoma procedures. Work collaboratively with optometrists. Manage complex glaucoma patients, providing high-level clinical expertise. Perform advanced glaucoma surgeries, including trabeculectomy, glaucoma drainage devices and MIGS. Support rapid access glaucoma clinics as part of the regular timetable. Provide cataract surgery lists and manage in line with GIRFT recommendations. Contribute to multidisciplinary team discussions and complex case management. Review at least 8 new patients or 10–12 follow‑up patients (depending on complexity) for each 4‑hour session. Review at least 20 patients for a virtual glaucoma clinic per 4‑hour session. About us Our trust has over 71,000 staff serving 2 million patients every year. Person Specification Education & professional Qualifications FRCOphth or equivalent ophthalmic qualification. Full GMC Registration (with a 'Licence to Practise'). Be on or eligible for the GMC specialist register, or be within 6 months of entry. Experience of team working in a multidisciplinary paediatric ophthalmology team. Experience of running a trainee teaching programme in Glaucoma care. Awareness of current issues affecting the NHS & UK Higher Education. Should have received training in clinical supervision as defined by the GMC. Ability to lead & co‑ordinate clinical teams. Experience Completed Higher Specialist Training in Ophthalmology. Extensive training and experience in management of paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus. Awareness of current issues affecting the NHS & UK Higher Education. Should have received training in clinical supervision as defined by the GMC. Skills and aptitudes Clinical Leadership working in multidisciplinary teams. Training junior doctors and allied healthcare professionals. Training the Trainer Course. ARCP assessor.
