Seasonal Animal Welfare Research Assistant Duration: Approx. Position Purpose The Seasonal Animal Welfare Research Assistant is responsible for assisting in behavioural research to assess animal welfare. They will work with the Manager of Welfare Science and the Supervisor of Behavioural Husbandry on various projects as they relate to welfare and other duties as directed. This position will assist and provide support in implementing the Strategic Plan. Core Role Responsibilities Observe live or pre-recorded behavioral observations of assigned animal or animal group. Participation in research design and coordination. Data analysis of observations. Reporting of data to staff using both oral and written means. Assist with coordinating the ZooMonitor Volunteer program. Assist staff with the development and delivery of education programs, training programs, and presentations to interested groups. Performs literature searches in preparation for publication of research material or for initiation of new projects. Assist with welfare assessment and behavioral husbandry programs as required. Follows all policies and branch instructions. Attends appropriate training as required. Performs other related tasks as required. Technical Knowledge And Skills University or college graduate; background in environmental science, conservation biology, or zoology, or the equivalent amount of training and related experience. Minimum 1 year of proven experience at a zoological institution conducting behavioural research, or the equivalent amount of training and related experience. Excellent observation skills. Able to work independently. Demonstrated interest in developing and implementing research projects. Demonstrated ability to produce well written reports. Demonstrable experience in the evaluation of animal welfare and behaviour modification is an asset Knowledge of conservation issues and the role of current technologies to monitor overall animal welfare is an asset Practical experience with animal care and behavioural husbandry is an asset Public speaking skills and experience is an asset Well-developed interpersonal skills, along with strong communications skills. Working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS legislation an asset. Must be knowledgeable in the use of computerized programs and systems, especially Microsoft Office and Excel. Must ensure all applicable licenses and certificates remain valid and in good standing. Copies of licenses and certificates to be provided at time of hire and upon renewal. Must be able to work weekends, shifts and holidays as scheduled. Must be able to deal with staff and public in a courteous and efficient manner. Capable of meeting the physical requirements of the position.
