Head Caretaker (Westdale School) Position #103‑WD – Pembina Trails School Division. Job Details Department: Facilities & Operations Department Supervisor Title: Operations Supervisor Hours: 8‑hour shift, 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday to Friday Start Date: January 5, 2026 Location: 165 Henlow Bay, Winnipeg, MB, R3Y 1G4 Position Description The Head Caretaker is responsible for routine maintenance and operation of the school’s physical facilities and assists the school administration with daily physical operation of the school. Responsibilities Communicates with Principal and Division Administration: maintains routine communication regarding progress of maintenance work orders, cleaning, use of the school by permit groups and overall operation of the building. Reports thefts, break‑ins, vandalism or abuse of the school and property to Principal and Director of Facilities. Conveys concerns of caretaking staff to Principal and/or Operations Supervisor. Maintains a safe and comfortable facility: inspects facilities, HVAC, building and grounds for hazards, keeps entrances and emergency exits clear, checks fire safety equipment, assists during emergency evacuations. Maintains cleanliness of the facility: performs cleaning activities, cleans outside glass, sweeps hallways, refills dispensers, disposes of lunch garbage, cleans mechanical rooms, plans and directs seasonal cleaning projects, assists during school breaks. Maintains grounds: sweeps sidewalks, rakes leaves, removes debris, cuts grass, trims trees/shrubs, waters lawns and flowerbeds. Maintains equipment and supplies: ensures custodial equipment is maintained and repaired, requisitions supplies, maintains inventory, ensures protective equipment and WHMIS information are available. Performs general maintenance and repairs: routine maintenance of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, snow blowers, lawn equipment, furniture repair, submits maintenance requests, maintains logbook and preventive maintenance schedule. Assists in providing direction and orientation to permanent and casual staff: mentors Caretaker 1, provides direction and encouragement, ensures keys are available and returned, communicates with evening staff. Performs related duties: maintains positive working relationships, attends to Canadian flag, assists user groups with facility setup, monitors permits, receives shipments, remains on premises during school hours, removes graffiti, assists with budget preparation, visually checks facility safety, supervises caretaking staff, provides training support, completes reports, evaluates staff performance. Qualifications Minimum education level: Grade 12 or equivalent. Graduation from an approved building operations or power engineering course desirable. Valid 5th Class Power Engineers’ Certificate from the Province of Manitoba. Experience Two years of successful experience in building operations work, including use of web‑based work ordering, e‑mail and computer software for personal productivity. Skills and Abilities Leadership of caretaking staff in an organized and effective manner. Excellent written, reading and verbal English skills; effective communication in English. Ability to work day shifts and respond to emergency calls evenings and weekends. Physical Requirements Good general fitness; ability to lift and carry 20 kg (45 lb) over a distance of 20 m (60 ft).
