Assistant Director of Flato Markham Theatre Discovery Camps

Job Summary We are looking for an Assistant Director who is a creative, organized and a passionate leader to assist the Artistic Director and creative team in all the creative and educational aspects of the theatre’s Discovery Performing Arts March Break Camp. The Assistant Director may take on some duties of a Stage Manager to ensure smooth coordination backstage and onstage during rehearsals and performance. They may also be required to help create a movie as part of the Perform for the Big Screen Camp. Under the direction of the Discovery Program Coordinator and Artistic Director, the Assistant Director will assist in program planning and program delivery for the one-week March Break programs which culminate with a fully staged musical theatre production at the end of this session. Through strategic leadership and programming, the Assistant Director will enable children and youth to develop skills, make friends, socialize and build self-esteem. Accountable for day-to-day operations ensuring camp activities are safe, inclusive and high quality. The Assistant Director will support supervision and coaching of approximately 40 staff including fellow Program Supervisors, Counsellors and Volunteers. Part time training hours between February 23, 2026 – March 15, 2026 Full time hours from March 16, 2026 – March 20, 2026 (min 35‑44 hours/week) SUMMER CAMP Part Time hours from late April 2026 – June 26th 2026 Full time hours June 29 – August 21st 2026 (no camp July 1st and August 3rd, 2026) How to Apply We ask all applications to submit their cover letter and resume by January 19th, 2026 at 5:00pm to Alan Kinsella, Discovery Program Coordinator at AKinsella@Markham.ca with the subject of your email listed as: Application for Assistant Director – Discovery Camps Job Requirements Post secondary education in Performing Arts, Technical Production, Arts Education and/or related field OR Experience in the performing arts (music, drama, dance), as a stage manager and/or performing arts educator/instructor (music, drama, dance) Minimum 3 years experience in a Leadership role/Assistant Director/Stage Manager and has demonstrated successful execution of similar programs for a large group of children of various ages Experience designing and delivering programs in musical theatre for children • Professional experience in youth arts education, musical theatre production and experience in a camp environment Experience in musical theatre production from beginning stages to show day, including, but not limited teaching choreography, casting, directing and blocking scenes Strong verbal/written communication skills • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint Experience with photo and video editing software is an asset Experience with filmmaking or video production is an asset Excellent customer service skills and sensitivity to interact with a diversity of parents and staff in a courteous and efficient manner Licenses/Certifications: Current Standard First Aid with CPR ‘C’ required The City of Markham is committed to inclusive, accessible and barrier free employment practices, and to creating a workplace that reflects and supports the diversity of the community we serve.
