Your opportunity Under the general supervision of the Analytical Facility Manager in the Advanced Instrumentation for Molecular Structure (AIMS) Facility, the Mass Spectrometry Specialist assists in the operation of the Mass Spectrometry core analytical facility by analyzing samples using chromatography and mass spectrometry instrumentation. These duties include acquisition, processing, interpretation, error checking and reporting of mass spectral data for a variety of samples (e.g. small organic molecules, proteins, peptides, oligonucleotides, organometallics, carbohydrates, organic polymers) using a variety of ionization sources (e.g. EI, CI, ESI, DART, MALDI) and a variety of mass spectrometers (e.g. quadrupole, time‑of‑flight). The Specialist provides services such as interpretation of mass spectra, HRMS determinations, isotopic purity analysis and GC‑MS/LC‑MS analyses. The Specialist is also responsible for maintaining sample records, performing routine instrument maintenance and calibration, adhering to quality control procedures and ensuring a safe working environment. Your responsibilities will include Performing lab experiments that require great precision and attention to many details Ensuring that the material needs of laboratory exercises and/or courses are available Constructing proof of concept experiments to test different elements of the process Preparing, assembling and setting‑up material, equipment and supplies used in teaching and/or research labs Coordinating routine maintenance of laboratory equipment Providing safety training and ensuring compliance to laboratory safety procedures and standards Serving as a technical resource on laboratory protocols and experimental procedures and equipment Essential Qualifications Master’s Degree in Chemistry or an acceptable combination of equivalent experience and education. Minimum 3 years of recent and relevant experience in the field of mass spectrometry, including demonstrated experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting a variety of mass analyzers (e.g. quadrupole, time‑of‑flight, ion trapping) with a variety of ion sources (EI, CI, ESI, DART, MALDI). Experience with GC‑MS and HPLC‑MS method development and implementation. -catching exceptions with EC & still adequate versa, experience in maintaining and troubleshooting instrumentation, including scanning electron microscopy (Quanta 250 FEG FEI Environmental SEM, Hitachi HT7700) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (FEI Tecnai TF20). Specific knowledge andGeneral baseline principle of mass spectrometry and separation science pertaining to chemical analysis using modern chromatography and mass spectrometer instrumentation. Excellent lab equipment maintenance skills and troubleshooting skills for hardware and software related to analytical instrumentation. High proficiency with mass musculist control and data processing platforms. Advanced computer skills and proficiency with Win 7/10/11 OS environments. Advanced skills in networking and file‑sharing protocols, MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, MS Outlook. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Excellent problem‑solving and analytical skills. Ability to work independently and effectively while under pressure to meet strict deadlines. Ability to work effectively and communicate proficiently. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to lift, carry, push, pull or hold more than 10 kg and up to 25 kg.
