Detailed Overview
The Recreation Therapist, Elders Day Program, is accountable to the Manager, and is responsible for creating a place of learning, healing and caring for Indigenous Elders in accordance with the mission, values and goals of Fraser Health. The Recreation Therapist develops, facilitates and evaluates recreation and social programs designed to meet the physical, social, emotional, cognitive and spiritual needs of Elders Day Program participants; conducts standardized individualized assessments of Elders and develops appropriate care plans.
Responsibilities
Works with Coordinator and/or Manager in the development recreation programming/services for the client population based on client/community needs and available resources at the assigned locations. Implements and evaluates recreation programming/services by reviewing and/or observing outcomes and implementing appropriate program/service modification to better meet outcomes/needs of the client population.
Ensure the clients are involved in recreation activities by facilitating, participating in and assisting in individual or group leisure activities.
Conducts assessments of client's social and leisure abilities, in collaboration with interdisciplinary team and community stakeholders, to identify client care goals and objectives; develops, evaluates and implements client's care plans.
Assesses clients' levels of functioning, interest, goals, objectives, and capacity to participate in group/individual program activities by methods such as taking leisure histories, analyzing leisure assessments, reviewing background information, and documenting client's condition, abilities and interests.
Serves as a resource in matters relating to leisure and recreation by providing educational sessions to clients.
Plans individual and/or group programs and services by establishing and prioritizing expected outcomes, discussing implementation options and determining resources available, in collaboration with program staff.
Acts as a resource to program staff regarding recreation needs of clients. Provides guidance and role model practices to program staff.
Participates on assigned committees and task groups by methods such as gathering information prior to meeting, attending meetings, providing input, and providing updates.
Participates in quality improvement activities by providing input into the development, implementation and evaluation of program goals, objectives, and procedures to ensure effective resource utilization.
Completes required report and records. Maintains files and records in accordance with program standards and procedures. Shares relevant reports and information on program with Coordinator.
Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of recreation programs. Recommends modifications to the Coordinator and/or Manager.
Engages with community partners to ensure program is developed and implemented inline with community needs and includes cultural content.
Identifies own learning needs and reviews with the Manager; addresses learning needs and maintains knowledge of current developments in evidence-based practice by methods such as reviewing relevant literature, consulting with other health care professionals, and attending relevant education programs to enhance the delivery of client care.
Transports passengers to program activities by operating a motor vehicle with a seating capacity of up to 10 (including driver).
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Graduation from a recognized Therapeutic Recreation Diploma Program. A minimum two (2) years of recent, related experience in areas such as developing wellness programs, working with Elders and in Indigenous community health; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Knowledge of Indigenous cultures, experience facilitating groups and program development.
Eligible for membership with the B.C. Therapeutic Recreation Association (BCTRA). Current certificate in CPR Level C.
Valid BC Driver's License and personal vehicle for work related purposes. Class IV BC Driver's Licence required.
Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated knowledge of therapeutic recreation, current trends and evidence-based practice.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Demonstrated ability to problem solve and effectively deal with conflict situations.
Ability to operate related equipment including applicable software applications.
Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
