Second Officer

Overview: Designated as the vessel’s Navigation Officer and Officer of the Watch for navigation and cargo operations. Ensuring that the bridge and navigational equipment is in good working order. Maintaining all navigation records in good order as required by the best practices guide and recognized navigation procedures.

Key tasks & responsibilities:

  1. Ensuring that the charts corrections and the library of navigational and regulatory publications are kept up to date.
  2. As navigation officer, he/she is mandated to prepare the passage plans and submit them to the master for approval.
  3. Keeping a cargo/port watch as instructed by the ships officer.
  4. Taking charge of a mooring party.
  5. Understudying the Chief Officer whenever suitable opportunities arise.
  6. Any other task and duties as instructed by the Master or by the Chief Officer for cargo operations.
  7. Assisting in all cargo, ballast, and cargo spaces operations.
  8. Monitoring of cargo and ballast operations as instructed by the Chief Officer.
  9. Ensuring that a proper deck and security watch is maintained.
  10. Ensuring that the vessel remains securely moored at all times.

Prerequisites:

  1. Be a Canadian citizen.
  2. Possess a valid Canadian passport with an expiry date over six (6) months from the time of joining.
  3. Possess a valid First Aid certificate as per the Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) V1/4.
  4. Possess a valid Transport Canada medical with a validity of six (6) months from the time of joining.
  5. Possess the required certification for the position held as per STCW and the Manila 2010 amendments for a vessel operating in unlimited waters.
  6. Possess a valid familiarization endorsement for oil.
  7. Possess a “designated security duties” certificate as per STCW regulation A-VI/6.
  8. Obtain and hold an Enhanced Reliability security clearance as required by the Provision of Services contract between Federal Fleet Services and Her Majesty the Queen in right of Canada, represented by the Minister of Public Services and Procurement Canada.
