The Senior Parks Planner is a key regional role within the Recreation and Resource Management program. Reporting to the Recreation and Resource Management Team Leader, the Senior Planner is responsible for leading the development and/or participating in the development of plans of varying complexity at the regional or park scale.

This encompasses activities and programs such as:

  1. Developing and leading planning exercises, evaluation and preparation of park management plans / interim management directives and site level operational planning initiatives
  2. Developing and maintaining provincial standards and processes for the development and enhancement for the planning of parks at regional or park scales
  3. Providing planning advice and support to regional and divisional staff
  4. Participating in First Nations, stakeholder and public consultation on plans
  5. Ensuring that recreation focused spatial and program planning, recreation, and tourism activities occurring on Park lands are compatible with the conservation values of parks and protected areas and consistent with legislation, regulations and policies
  6. Representing the Parks Operations Division on regional, inter-ministerial, interprovincial initiatives as well as working with other levels of government
  7. Regular collaboration with national, provincial and municipal park agencies to share ideas and develop creative solutions for the planning of parks
  8. Researching new and innovative means for planning within the Alberta Parks system

The incumbent may be responsible for:

  1. Supervision of seasonal staff, contractors and consultants
  2. Sitting on Regional and Provincial working groups
  3. Managing referrals from other Divisions and Ministries
  4. Being an active voice and contributor up to Regional leadership
Qualifications

Post Secondary, Bachelor’s Degree in parks and protected areas planning, environmental science or related discipline, (A Master’s degree in same would be preferred) supplemented by 4 years of progressively responsible related experience in planning, environmental/parks management, or stakeholder engagement.
A valid Class 5 Driver’s License

Assets Include:

  1. Knowledge of Parks systems and associated legislation, policies and practices
  2. Experience in stakeholder consultation and engagement
  3. Strong mediation and negotiation skills and the ability to develop and maintain strategic partnerships with various stakeholders
  4. Strong written and verbal communication skills
  5. Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite and Adobe software
  6. Experience and Understanding of GIS, Avenza and other geospatial software
  7. First Aid, Level "C" CPR, certificate

Location: As this is a regional position, preferred location to work is either in Lac La Biche or Grande Prairie.

The position is located in an office setting with some field work required. p>

Final candidates will be required to undergo a Level 1 security screening, as well as provide a three-year drivers abstract./>Include date ranges (month and year) associated with all education and work experience. Indicate whether your work experience was casual, part-time (PT) or full-time (FT). Example: Maintenance Foreman: Jan 2016 – June 2019 (PT, 3 eight hour shifts per week)
