Hours of work: Full-time (37.5 hrs/week) No. of positions: 1 What You’ll Do We currently have a challenging and exciting opportunity for a Senior Civil Engineer in the Transmission Lines Engineering Division. Design efficient and reliable foundations for overhead electrical transmission line and telecommunication antenna supporting structures. Coordinate design activities to maintain project schedules and budgets to help ensure successful delivery. Analyze and resolve a variety of challenging civil engineering problems of high complexity with independent judgment and high collaboration for new and existing transmission line and antenna supporting structures foundations. Manage large engineering design work packages within multi‑discipline project teams, including planning, resources, and coordinating work to ensure commitments are met. Develop creative and innovative engineering techniques, make recommendations for strategic business decisions, and seek to influence with proposed business solutions. Complete accurate, reliable and cost‑effective designs for 69 kV to 500 kV overhead transmission line supporting structures foundations and telecommunication antenna supporting structures foundations that meet BC Hydro standards and specifications, safety by design practices, as well as constructability requirements; this includes modeling, analysis, design of foundations and infrastructures, and preparation of all required design deliverables. Act as Professional of Record (POR) for various transmission projects. Prepare technical and project specifications, technical input for cost estimates, and request for proposal (RFP) documents for material supply and foundation installation. Implement BC Hydro Project and Portfolio Management (PPM) Design Practices in all work assignments, including Safety by Design Procedure, Check and Review Practice and Field Review Practice. Resolve site queries, attend site meetings, and perform field reviews during the construction phase of projects. Maintain complete engineering documentation with respect to transmission civil design and construction, including design basis, design plan, calculations, drawings, reports, safety by design process documents, checking and reviewing records, field review records, design completion reports, record drawings, and other related information. Act as Independent Checker or Independent Structural Reviewer for work of internal team and/or consultants to ensure compliance with EGBC requirements and BC Hydro PPMP. As “Owner's Engineer,” act as Reviewer for external consultants' and contractors' designs to ensure compliance with contractual scope and deliverable requirements, BC Hydro engineering standards, sound design practices and constructability criteria. Initiate and maintain strongly influential professional relationships with internal and external colleagues; collaborate with project and design teams and other business groups or customers; identify impact of work on others and resolve issues proactively. Provide technical leadership internally and externally for specialized skills in transmission line structural design. Perform regular and significant mentoring/coaching and engage in proactive self‑development. What You Bring Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering recognized by Canadian Universities and EGBC. Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (EGBC). Minimum of 8 years of proven working experience and demonstrated performance in civil engineering field relevant to overhead electrical transmission lines at voltage up to 500 kV. Excellent technical knowledge in structural engineering design of steel, concrete, and timber. Application and knowledge in geotechnical engineering aspect of foundation design. Knowledge of transmission line foundation design such as grillage, rock foundation, direct embedment, caisson, guy anchors and helical piles. Knowledge in seismic design and soil‑structure interaction is preferred. Knowledge of applicable Canadian codes and standards, including CSA S16, CSA A23.3, CSA O86, and Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual. Knowledge in structural analysis software, SAP2000, is preferred. Ability to investigate, analyze and solve a variety of engineering problems that are highly complex and medium scope in nature. Ability to communicate effectively and clearly in oral and written formats on technical matters to technical and nontechnical audiences. Ability to work in multi‑discipline team environment is essential. Ability to manage client relationships and work closely with stakeholders to drive innovation, find engineering solutions that add value and reach consensus is required. Capability to coordinate multiple engineering design projects and to plan and manage project resources is desirable. Demonstrated effectiveness in work leadership at Senior Engineer level is required. Excellent leadership, communication, technical writing, interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills are required. Proactive approach in ongoing professional and personal development activities such as self‑study, attendance at technical and administrative courses, and participation in technical and professional societies is required. This position is a hybrid flexible work role and the home office location is Edmonds office in Burnaby. The applicant must be able to report to the office within a reasonable time frame when called upon for work. Currently, the expectation is a minimum of 2 days per week in the office and may be more depending on business need.
