In the upcoming year, we are embarking on an exciting journey marked by transformative changes, notably the implementation of a new ERP system. The Quality Manager will play a pivotal role in this process to ensure the seamless integration and success of this undertaking.

GENERAL:
Reporting directly to the Director of Quality Assurance, the Quality Assurance Manager is responsible for the administration of Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR) and customer requirements at the manufacturing facility, ensuring that the processes needed for compliance are established, implemented, and maintained. The QA Manager acts as plant lead in fostering and promoting our safe quality foods culture, working with operations to schedule and control inspection activities and to enforce requirements, initiate corrective action for procedural product or process deficiencies. Provisions will be made to cover the absence of an employee in this position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following list of duties and responsibilities of the QA Manager is not intended to be an all-inclusive list of duties and responsibilities of the job described. Rather they are intended only to describe the general nature of the job.

  1. Leadership
    • Manage the QA department, including recruiting, training, coaching, counseling employees, communicating job expectations, monitoring and appraising job performances, providing leadership and support that encourages teamwork, safety performance, personal responsibility, and continuous improvement.
    • Lead the plant food safety and quality training programs, working in partnership with plant operations to establish procedures, standards, and systems that are well-designed and executed.
    • Maintain Quality Assurance Systems and oversee SFCR programs to meet regulatory compliance and ensure product quality and food safety, working with operating staff to ensure effective implementation and maintenance of process control measures and programs.
    • Provide technical support to Operations, Product Development, and Business Development; collaborate with other members of management to develop new product and engineering designs, manufacturing, and training methods.
    • Lead quality and food safety investigations as they arise and provide recommendations for improvements and/or corrective actions.
    • Update job knowledge by studying trends and developments in quality management, participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organizations.
  2. Food Safety & Quality Management
    • Work with QA staff to execute all required quality and food safety tests accurately and efficiently, determining operational and performance qualifications, measuring production, documenting evidence, and ensuring manufacturing processes comply with regulatory and customer requirements.
    • Manage customer quality assurance relationships, ensuring customer standards are met, and writing management/technical reports and customer correspondence as required.
    • Oversee the quality requirements of raw materials with suppliers and follow up on non-conformances.
    • Maintain the facility’s certifications and regulatory approvals: SFCR, FSEP, SQF.
    • Oversee the recording, analysis, and distribution of quality information, prepare quality documentation and reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends, including failed processes, studies, corrective actions, and re-validations.
    • Ensure product conformance to specifications and maintain/improve product quality by completing product, company, system, compliance, and surveillance audits.
    • Provide technical support to Operations, Product Development, and Business Development by contributing information and analyses to strategic plans and reviews, identifying and resolving problems, and determining system improvements and implementing change.
    • Coordinate and perform CFIA, customer, and JDS audits as needed.
    • Manage customer complaints.
  3. Operational Growth & Development
    • Recruit, train, supervise, coach, and lead QA staff to meet the company's core competency.
    • Support training programs for relevant FSEP and Health Canada procedures, product quality requirements, equipment, and process technology.
    • Contribute to the overall health and safety of yourself and all team members. Participate in JHSC initiatives and follow established policies as outlined in the Health and Safety policies.
    • Report all accidents, incidents, and near misses to your supervisor and a member of the Health and Safety Committee.
    • Perform all other reasonable duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in food science or other scientific area of study or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of work experience in the food (preferably in the meat) industry in a technical leadership capacity.
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory / managerial experience.
  • Demonstrated competency in Safe Food for Canadian Regulations (SFCR), Health Canada and FSEP systems.
  • Experience with internal and external auditing.
  • Be flexible with working hours.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong coaching skills.
  • Above average analytical skills.
  • Strong computer skills in Excel and Word.
