ROLE SUMMARY
The Master Roaster is a key leader within the 49th Parallel roasting team who is responsible for maintaining roasted coffee to exceptional standards. The Master Roaster will train & mentor roasters, supervisor the roasters & roaster assistant, create the daily roast schedule, assist with cupping and quality control, input to green coffee purchases, dial in new coffees, create roasting profiles, and roast coffee to our exceptional set standards. This position works closely with the Director of Coffee, Quality Control Specialist, Packaging Supervisor, Shipping Supervisor in addition to the 49th Roasting team. The Master Roaster has administrative tasks around green bean inventory and ensures that the ERP and roasting software are aligned.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Operate multi-function roast machine(s) via Cropster Intelligence Follow, correct, and further develop roast profiles Lead and mentor a team of Roasters and Roster Assistants to achieve goals, teamwork, and targets Communicate and lead roasting team with daily/weekly briefings and training Create daily roast schedule Perform record of production information (quantity, weights, types, roast colour, recipe profiles, quality, etc.) Actively participate in cupping sessions with roast scores Supervisor the Roaster Assistant to ensure that all daily green bean replenishment for staging purposes get done in timely fashion Manage and troubleshoot raw material inventory with Cropster software Inventory management of raw material (green coffee beans) Schedule and participate in daily cleaning of all processing/roasting machines and work area Schedule Preventative Maintenance tasks for Roasters Be able to lift 30kg bins all day/load the roaster
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Minimum of 3 years of experience in specialty coffee roasting/ production lead Passionate about coffee with deep knowledge of specialty coffee, coffee trends and café operations Ability/openness to always improve knowledge of roasting and physical properties of roasted coffee, coffee tasting & evaluating skills Attention to detail, able to present digestible information effectively Ability to work under pressure and manage time effectively to achieve results Ability to build strong internal working relationships and be an effective leader and communicator Have a “no job is too small” mentality: you roll up your sleeves, boldly jump in and get it done Dependable, results-oriented and process driven, with high expectations of self and team Mechanically inclined Nice to have: Familiar with Cropster software Nice to have: Strong MS Office skills in Excel, Power Point, and Word
