Underwriting Specialist, Environmental Zurich Canada is looking for an Environmental Underwriting Specialist to analyze and underwrite new and renewal Contractors, Consultants and Site Environmental Liability business. The role reports to the AVP, Manager Environmental. This is a hybrid opportunity and a chance to build expertise in a supportive environment where your voice matters. What you will do Proactively seek renewal and new account opportunities, managing incoming submissions and soliciting business through pipelining. Measure exposure and analyze complex environmental risk across industry classes, including manufacturing, real estate, construction, and energy. Review and synthesize findings from environmental due diligence (Phase I & II Environmental Site Assessments, etc.) and underwrite policy terms for known and unknown pollution conditions. Pre‑qualify accounts to align with the organization's line‑of‑business appetite, using a solution‑oriented approach. Act as a subject‑matter expert in product development and contribute to draft manuscript forms, underwriting manuals, programs and guidelines. Lead in‑person visits with brokers and customers, and participate in internal stakeholder meetings to strengthen relationships. Identify and initiate risk‑engineering opportunities, conducting on‑site surveys with Zurich Risk Resilience engineers and incorporating findings into Terms & Conditions. Negotiate Terms & Conditions, ensuring deals close and further opportunities are pursued. Collaborate across business units to cross‑sell and increase product density, supporting colleagues across lines of business. Participate in team meetings and demonstrate behavior that promotes well‑being and performance. Maintain accurate data hygiene for account information. Achieve operational metrics through accurate issuance and coding of policy transactions. Mentor junior staff and new hires in underwriting and operations. Contribute to thought leadership through external publications and seminars. Conduct broker and customer presentations on Environmental Liability and emerging issues. Manage project completion, maintaining dialogue with stakeholders during planning and implementation. Required Qualifications High School Diploma or Equivalent with 5+ years of experience in Underwriting or Market‑Facing areas. OR 10+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support areas. OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 3+ years experience in Underwriting or Market‑Facing areas. OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 8+ years experience in Claims or Underwriting Support areas. Knowledge of Microsoft Office. Experience meeting time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business. Team‑environment experience. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Life, Environmental Sciences, Chemical/Environmental Engineering. 5‑7 years in an Environmental Underwriting or Broking role. 1‑3 years in an Environmental Consulting or Technician role with experience reviewing Phase I & II Environmental Site Assessments. Strong verbal and written communication; bilingual (French & English) fluency is strongly preferred. High proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat suite.
