Director of Nursing

Participates with the leadership team and other managers in leading the development and coordination of strategic planning as well as in the planning, implementation and evaluation of health care programs provided by Western and Community Hospitals, ensuring compliance with accreditation standards. Demonstrates leadership through accountability for the planning, coordinating and evaluation of all administrative functions, clinical programs and activities within the nursing department including performance management system for managers and keeping managers informed of activities, problems, policy changes and administrative matters. Facilitates planning for staff development, continuing education and research with particular focus on new technology, specialty nursing services, quality management, team building and effective professional communication. Planning, monitoring and evaluating services and programs to ensure a quality delivery of acute nursing services to support innovations in the provision of nursing care with a basis on current evidence and trends, and collaborating with medical staff and any other health care providers including support services. Promotes and implements a person-centered care approach. Performs human resource management functions including selecting, assigning senior nursing staff, orientation, interpreting regulations and procedures, participating in contract negotiation, delegating responsibility to supervisory personnel, evaluating performance of personnel and taking disciplinary action as required. Prepares and monitors annual operating and capital budgets, determining staffing requirements, monitors overall nursing department performance and oversees the development of annual plans identifying service targets and goals. Assists the nurse manager as required with the resolution of issues and in addressing complaints within the nursing department in a timely fashion. Ensures compliance with all relevant legislation/regulation, including occupational health and safety, risk management, fire regulations, and other health and safety programs as set out by the organization. Ensures staff clinical competency, implementation of professional standards, adherence to professional code of conduct, and ensuring compliance with accreditation standards in support of the quality teams. Fosters effective working relationships and collaborates with various stakeholders within the hospitals, Health PEI, patients, general public, and other health agencies in the system in the design, implementation and evaluation of the provincial health care delivery system; including representing administration on a number of health system and interdepartmental committees and groups. Acts as the Administrator for Community Hospitals West as delegated and required. Participates in an administrative call schedule rotation with senior Community Hospitals West leadership in providing after-hours coverage to Community Hospitals West. Minimum Qualifications:
Must have a Master's degree in Nursing or a degree in nursing and strong related leadership experience. Consideration may be given to applicants with a related Master's degree. Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered. Demonstrated skills in leadership, decision making, planning, motivation, conflict management, communication, team building, and group management is required Extensive nursing experience in progressively responsible positions is required. Must be currently registered or be eligible for registration with the College of Registered Nurses and Midwives of Prince Edward Island. The candidate should be a lifelong learner and focused on ensuring best practice in care delivery.
