About The Position:

Acute Mental Health and Addictions provides specialized care, long-term treatment, and rehabilitation for individuals facing acute or enduring mental illness and substance use disorders. Services include assessment, primary medical care, primary mental health care and education; in-patient withdrawal therapy opiate agonist treatment, and disease prevention and management.

The purpose of this position is to maintain, improve, restore and optimize the health status of clients within an acute setting through direct client care for individuals and families. The Nurse Practitioner functions autonomously as a substance use specialist in a collaborative setting and provides holistic care.

The Nurse Practitioner manages a patient caseload as an integral member of a Health Care Team. The team is composed of a variety of health care providers and team composition may vary depending on identified needs. The Practitioner works collaboratively with all healthcare providers. Direct client services provided by the Nurse Practitioner include client history and physical, mental health assessment, and substance use assessment. This position is responsible for the care of patients in the in-patient withdrawal unit at the Provincial Addictions Treatment Center and in the new acute care mental health and addictions hospital in the future state. This position reports to the Director of Acute and Complex Care MHA.

Duties will include:
Practices following current federal and provincial legislation, professional and ethical standards, and policies relevant to nurse practitioner practice and setting.
Maintains a current registration with CRNMPEI.
Attains, maintains and enhances competencies within their area of practice.
Applies advanced assessment techniques and clinical decision-making skills when assessing clients, including but not limited to withdrawal-specific assessments (COWS, CIWA, etc.).
Systematically collects and interprets health data by performing a comprehensive and focused health assessment using multiple tools and sources of data.
Integrates the five World Health Organization principles of primary health care into clinical decision-making: accessibility, public participation, health promotion, appropriate technology, and intersectoral collaboration.
Initiates or participates in the development of strategies to address identified client and population health implications and the known risks and benefits to the client, as well as the anticipated outcome, and ensures safeguards and resources are available to manage outcomes when initiating interventions.
Provides client education about interventions including expected action, the importance of compliance, side effects, potential adverse reactions, possible and follow up plan.
Establishes collaborative relationships with other healthcare providers and community groups.
Consult other health care providers when the needs of the client are beyond the legislated scope of the NP, the NP's competence, or when the NP identifies the client would benefit from the expertise of another health care provider.
Contributes to building and maintaining positive and cooperative team relationships and healthy workplace culture.
Engages relevant community support to support crisis management.
Performs to a maximum scope of practice; recognizes acuity/presentations beyond the scope and utilizes collaborative approach when necessary.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary environment with excellent collaborative, team-building, and consultative skills.

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from an approved and recognized nurse practitioner program.
Registered with the College of Registered Nurses and Midwives to practice as a Nurse Maintain CPR certification.
Education in evidence-based substance abuse withdrawal. Certified in opiate agonist treatment (may be completed within the first month);
Thorough knowledge and proficiency in medical and nursing physical assessments and treatment methods. Critical thinking proficiency to assess, analyze, diagnose, select treatment, evaluate, and refer patients with common acute or chronic health conditions, or for health promotion/illness prevention.
Knowledge and experience in withdrawal therapy and opiate replacement therapy induction and/or a willingness to obtain employer-provided education to develop proficiency within the first year of employment.
Knowledge of practice setting programs and the community they serve, as well as current grasp of evidence-based approaches and epidemiology issues pertinent to the catchment area and available resources.
Previous Nurse Practitioner experience in addictions or withdrawal management setting preferred.
Five or more years of nursing experience in a combination of hospital and community settings.
Previous experience in leadership roles is considered an asset.
Proficiency and experience working in a computerized environment.
Performs to a maximum scope of practice; recognizes acuity/presentations beyond scope and utilizes collaborative approach when necessary.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary environment with excellent collaborative, team-building, and consultative skills.
Excellent communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills in dealing with clients, families, community groups, professional colleagues, and referral partners.
Proven verbal and written communication skills to ensure an effective and efficient working environment.
Demonstrated ability in preparing and presenting to the community and practice setting staff information for the promotion of health and/or partnership.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
Must be available to work flexible hours and shifts such as evenings and weekends as required.
