Senior Substation Design Engineer – Canada Company: WSP | Location: Alberta, Canada | Job Type: Full-time | Seniority Level: Mid‑Senior Overview WSP’s Power subsector supports clients across Canada in the development, rehabilitation, and detailed design of medium to extra‑high‑voltage utility substations. As a Senior Substation Physical Design Engineer you will lead the electrical design of substations for medium and high‑voltage utility systems and renewable energy interconnections. Responsibilities Perform and direct others in the detailed design of medium to extra high voltage utility substations. Prepare one‑line diagrams, conduit and cable sizing/routing, substation physical layouts, general arrangements, elevation views, grounding design, lightning design and calculations, develop design criteria documents, select substation equipment, write substation equipment specifications, develop proposals, prepare construction cost estimates, and schedule projects. Occasional travel will be required. Qualifications Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent from an accredited university. Professional license (P.Eng) or P.L. (Eng.) or ability to obtain within 6 months. Ten (10) or more years of experience in utility substation design. Strong experience with 15 kV through 240 kV substation design and IEEE/ANSI standards. Proven ability to develop detailed physical substation design and drawing package from a written design basis memorandum (DBM) or scope of work (SOW) with minimal oversight and cross‑coordinate effectively with civil, P&C, and studies engineers. Experience leading design engineering on several substation projects concurrently. Experience in EHV substation design desired. Project management and leadership of multidisciplinary teams considered an asset. Cost estimating and scheduling experience desired.
