This includes applying nursing knowledge, skill and judgement when providing clinical advice, supporting the development of recovery plans for an Injured Person (IP) and interpreting medical/clinical findings to ensure case progression towards the best possible RTW, recovery, and quality of life outcomes throughout the case life cycle.NCs interact with case managers, return to work specialists, workers, workers’ families, health care providers and other WSIB staff to recognize and respond to complex needs, make and communicate timely, quality evidenced-based/informed health care entitlement decisions. As interventionists, NCs identify and mitigate obstacles to RTW and/or recovery, resolving medical/clinical issues and addressing non-medical issues to prevent cases from becoming chronic.NCs work with case owners and Adjudicators to identify individual case characteristics. The scope and duration of NC intervention are based on joint discussions and the obstacles involved.Major Duties & ResponsibilitiesRender entitlement/compatibility decisions related to health care and dental treatment based on legislation, policy, best practices and clinical judgement; communicate them verbally and in writing.Attempt to resolve objections to health care entitlement decisions, manage reconsideration requests, and, if unable to resolve the objection, arrange for access and process the objection; implement health care components of appeals decisions within required timeframes.Conduct assessments and/or file reviews to support the functional recovery case plan, facilitate recovery action(s), including treatment/assessment until resolution of recovery obstacles; intervene with health care providers to promote integration of the worker’s treatment and recovery into the RTW process.Conduct medication reviews to identify issues affecting RTW or quality of life; facilitate access to care and clinic referrals; provide information and support to health care providers.Collaborate with case owner, Return to Work Specialist, Manager, workplace parties and health care providers on case plan activities and timelines; identify cases at risk of prolonged recovery and develop plans to address obstacles.Perform assessments to aid mitigation strategies and identify flags, barriers (clinical, psycho-social, chronic pain) likely to stall RTW and recovery.Identify and implement interventions and mitigating strategies to achieve optimal recovery and quality of life outcomes.Educate and influence workers and external providers about RTW best practices, guidelines and processes; inform workers and employers of their rights and responsibilities under relevant health care provisions of the Act; provide education to prevent recurrences.Assess medical/clinical documentation for completeness and timeliness; take action with providers as needed; act as a clinical resource for internal staff on health care questions and interpretation of findings.Provide immediate, short-term crisis intervention for workers and/or families at risk of self-harm or harm to others.Remain current in clinical education through participation in relevant sessions and provide feedback on trends impacting duration or RTW, health care benefits.Perform other duties as required or assigned including participation in business, team, or project activities.EducationUniversity completion at undergraduate level with a specialty in Nursing, or prior to 2005 a diploma or bachelor’s degree in Nursing as recognized by the College of Nurses of Ontario; a certificate of registration as a Registered Nurse in good standing with CONO (General Class).ExperienceThree years of prior clinical experience (e.g., primary health care, occupational health, adult acute/community care).Equity, Diversity and InclusionWe respect and value the diversity of our people.
