As our Manager, Merchant Underwriting & Portfolio Risk, you will lead a team to manage the risk of onboarding new merchants and monitoring our established merchant base to help businesses access our platform for affordable payments. You will develop and optimize credit strategies and frameworks and work with cross-functional teams to manage credit risk at scale while preserving a quality, human-focused experience that encourages our customers to grow with us.A Successful CandidateDevelops the framework and strategies that incorporate our AI products to evaluate and manage merchant onboarding and processing on our platform, balancing business growth against risk.Owns the performance of the credit risk domain, driving continuous improvement in our practices.Leads and develops a high-performing team of Credit Risk Analysts, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.Adjudicates on complex applications where escalated support is needed.Monitors the performance of our portfolio to proactively identify new risks.Defines and executes initiatives in close collaboration with data, product, and software development teams to improve and iterate how we manage credit risk.Helps develop long-term plans and a strategy for mitigating financial risk across current and future products.Monitors and ensures compliance with organizational, business, strategic, operational, legal, reputation and market risks where applicable.Key Competencies5+ years of experience in credit risk management, underwriting, analytics in the financial industry, or related areas.Ability to work with the unknown and create frameworks when none exist.Proven track record of leading teams balancing operational excellence and business delivery.Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with processes built from scratch and iterated based on new findings.Bachelor’s degree or higher in Finance, Economics, or a related field.Relevant professional certifications (e.g., CFA, FRM) are a plus.Experience with credit analysis frameworks, commercial credit underwriting, financial risk modeling, or cash flow forecasting.Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey credit insights and strategies.Experience using SQL or other data processing languages is a plus.Experience in payments, ecommerce, or fintech is an asset.Helcim CultureWe build things ourselves and we build them well.
