Position type: Permanent, full time Compensation: $68,000 – 72,000 + commensurate benefits Anticipated start date: as soon as possible Reports to: Executive Director and Artistic Director Overview The Financial Controller is responsible for executing and tracking financial controls, policies, and procedures, as well as overseeing the daily financial operations, book‑keeping, and administration for Fringe Theatre’s year‑round operations. The Financial Controller leads the process in building annual budgets with the support of various department leads; strategizes growth opportunities in collaboration with the leadership team; and manages the financial health of the organization. This position works cross‑functionally with all departments, as well as vendors, granters, sponsors, donors, Board and Committee members, and other relationships important to the health and vitality of Fringe Theatre’s operations. A passion for Fringe, live theatre, and the local arts scene helps, too Job Description Strategic Planning Develop and maintain financial policies, procedures, controls, and secure records management. Oversee and steward financial contracts, agreements, and grants. Create resources and supports for teams to deepen their financial literacy skills professionally as well as personally. Develop strategies and opportunities for the sustainable financial growth of the organization in three-, five- and ten-year planning cycles. Provide financial guidance and support to leadership. Lead the various departments in the planning, implementation, and execution of financial policies, procedures, and controls. Budgeting & Financial Controls Develop tools and provide financial guidance and supports to all departments in establishing, monitoring, and reporting on departmental budgets. Develop tools, monitor, and analyze Fringe Theatre’s annual budgets, including operational and capital budgets. Establish and maintain internal controls to safeguard organizational assets, ensure effective budget utilization, and guarantee compliance with relevant regulations. Conduct regular internal audits to identify and address financial discrepancies. Oversee annual audits, organizational reporting, and financial forecasts. Accounting Operations Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records using industry-standard accounting software. Process and reconcile accounts payable and receivable, ensuring accuracy and compliance with organizational policies and statutory charitable requirements. Charitable Reporting Prepare and submit timely and accurate financial reports for internal and external stakeholders, with special attention paid to key funder relationships. Ensure compliance with all charitable reporting requirements to government agencies and regulatory bodies. Payroll and Human Resources Oversee payroll processes, ensuring accurate and timely processing of employee remittances and benefits management. Support Director of HR with personnel files, records of employment, and other human resource documentation in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Qualifications Minimum five years accounting experience combined with post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field such as Business Administration or Information Technology. Professional accounting or bookkeeping designation an asset. Exceptional bookkeeping skills including knowledge and experience working with QuickBooks software as well as Canadian Revenue Agency digital tools. Familiarity with information technology platforms, infrastructure, and applications (for example, customer relationship management databases, box office ticketing systems, website and APP interfaces, point-of-sale systems etc.). Proven understanding of charitable statutory requirements, including cyclical reporting and filing pertinent to the good standing of the organization. Understanding of arts granting application and reporting processes. Excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills. Ability to prioritize and multi-task. Ability to work in a fast‑paced, creative environment that responds to the evolving and innovative needs of a leading theatre arts company. This is a full-time, permanent position that generally follows a Monday‑Friday schedule. Please note: the workload of this position scales with the cycles of the Festival season, with increased focus and responsibility required from May to September to support the planning, delivery, and financial wrap‑up of the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival.
