Maintenance and Facilities Manager

Salmon Coast Society is a charitable organization and hub for coastal research, enabling high-quality and innovative science to sustain wild salmon and their ecosystems. We do this through the operation of a field station located in Kwikwasut’inuxw Haxwa’mis territory, in the Broughton Archipelago, near Echo Bay, BC. For more information, please visit salmoncoast.org. We are hiring one person to fill the role of Maintenance and Facilities Manager. This position supports day-to-day operations of the field station alongside a Station Coordinator, and oversees and manages the upkeep and improvements of the field station infrastructure. Through collaboration with the board of directors, staff, volunteers, and contractors, the Maintenance and Facilities Manager will: Ensure a safe and inclusive environment for staff, volunteers, and station users; Oversee the operation and maintenance of off-grid energy systems (generator, solar panels, micro-hydro, and battery bank); Monitor, repair, and maintain off-grid water tanks and plumbing systems; Maintain buildings and equipment (including some construction, wiring, and plumbing); Perform routine maintenance on boats and outboard engines, and troubleshoot issues as needed; Ensure the station is prepared for winter (hauling and chopping logs for firewood, winterizing); Check and maintain safety systems, including fire suppression system, fire extinguishers, first aid supplies, and AED; Conduct safety drills and training for staff and visitors; Undertake general repairs around the station; Occasionally lead or assist with larger infrastructure improvements alongside volunteers or contractors; Support logistics including town runs to transport station users, groceries, and supplies; Engage staff, station users, and volunteers to assist with maintenance tasks; Contribute to the care and maintenance of gardens and landscaping; Support field research programs at the station by serving as a part-time crew member on an as-needed basis. Required Experience and Qualifications Experience with off-grid systems Experience maintaining small engines Experience with other maintenance activities listed above Marine boating experience Experience or interest in conservation research The ability to work closely with a small, diverse team in a remote settingA positive attitude when working on physically demanding tasks in all weather conditions; Marine Basic First Aid and CPR certifications, or willingness to acquire Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) certificate, or willingness to acquire Restricted Operator Certificate Marine Radio License (ROCM), or willingness to acquire An Ideal Candidate Would Have: Ability to work with minimal supervision; Experience in leadership roles and an ability to effectively manage staff and volunteers; Experience with remote and/or off-grid living and systems; Experience with communal living situations; An ability to adapt to changing circumstances easily; Strong interpersonal, communication, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills; Other skills/interests that complement the needs of the station (photography, social media, gardening, carpentry, boat maintenance, education/outreach experience) Terms We are seeking one candidate for a full-time, permanent position starting on or around March 1, 2026. The successful applicant is expected to live at the station year-round. During a portion of the slow season (~November-February), there may be flexibility to take unpaid time away from the station. In your free time enjoy abundant outdoor recreational opportunities including kayaking, hiking, fishing, boating, wildlife viewing and more. SVOP, Marine Basic First Aid and CPR, and ROCM will be required before the start date. Compensation We offer $4,000/month (some flexibility dependent on experience) for an average of 40 hours per week, with communal housing provided. During the field season (approx. April-September), dinner is also provided.
