(EMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medavie Health Services (MHS). EMC manages and operates ground ambulance, air medical transport, and medical communications operations in Nova Scotia under a performance‑based contract with the provincial government’s Emergency Health Services (EHS) Operations division and the Department of Health and Wellness. EMC also operates TeleHealth/811 medical communications for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. We respond to 165,000+ calls annually across the province. The EHS Operations LifeFlight programme provides greater accessibility through critical care teams on helicopter, fixed‑wing, or ground ambulance transport. As a Critical Care Nurse (CCN), you will report to the Operations Support Supervisor and work as part of the adult medical team, typically comprising a CCN and a Critical Care Paramedic. Your responsibilities include delivering clinical care in aviation and ground transport environments, completing documentation, and applying advanced assessment, stabilization, and intervention skills under the EHS LifeFlight Medical Director’s protocols. Roles include supporting safety initiatives, fostering a culture of patient safety, and maintaining professional competencies through continuing education and clinical exposure under the Medical Director’s oversight. Duties and Responsibilities Demonstrate accountability for nursing practice by complying with Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) Code of Ethics, College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia (CRNNS) standards, and Professional Nursing bylaws. Deliver appropriate patient care within RN scope of practice. Perform advanced patient assessment, stabilization, and intervention under approved standards and protocols. Execute delegated medical functions approved by the LifeFlight Medical Director and CRNNS. Provide efficient and effective patient care within confined spaces, ensuring safety of patient and team. Operate life support equipment safely and appropriately. Maintain comprehensive knowledge of communications equipment and professional interaction. Complete accurate Patient Care Records (PCR) and related documentation within required time frames. Ensure all required medical supplies are present and perform equipment checks before, during, and after transports. Engage in continuous professional development, including continuing education, required skills training, and clinical exposure. Apply decision‑making and initiative as needed. Comply with LifeFlight policies, procedures, code of conduct, and confidentiality agreements. Obtain additional clinical hours at a tertiary care centre in an approved critical care area. Risk and Safety Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of aviation and ground ambulance safety, participating in safe medical transport operations. Promote a safe working environment by identifying and resolving potential risks. Actively implement safety measures to protect self and others. Leadership Actively develop peers through knowledge sharing, feedback, preceptoring, role‑modeling, mentoring, and coaching. Serve as an ambassador for EHS, LifeFlight, and EMC. Contribute to professional nursing practice through participation and leadership in program, organizational, and professional activities or committees. Quality Management Support and participate in the Accreditation process and Quality Management Program. Participate in reviewing and developing operational policies, procedures, and protocols. Participate and support clinical research under the Medical Director’s direction to develop best practices and evidence‑based protocols. Other Take initiative in maximizing downtime, participating in at least one project or committee within LifeFlight; provide annual downtime utilisation report. Perform routine duties and other comparable or related duties as required or assigned. Qualifications and Requirements Education & Experience BScN/BN or other post‑secondary degree. Post‑RN critical care or emergency programme. Previous air/ground medical transport experience. Experience with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Current registration or eligibility for registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia (CCRNS). Minimum of five years clinical experience, including at least three years in critical care at a tertiary or high‑volume centre. Current BLS‑C and ACLS certification. Previous pediatric patient care experience, an asset. Current certification in BTLS, ATLS (audit), NRP, PTLS, and PALS, an asset. Completion of a leadership course, an asset. Instructor certification in PALS, BLS‑C, ACLS, an asset. Knowledge & Skills Maintain active employment in critical care or high‑volume ground ambulance system. Strong practical knowledge of ICU practices and pharmacology. Good physical coordination and ability to withstand strenuous movements; must lift 50 lbs independently. Compliance with EMC/EHS LifeFlight weight policy. Evidence of commitment to professional and personal development. Good eyesight (or corrective lenses) and accurate colour vision. Must pass a pre‑employment physical appraisal approved by an EHS LifeFlight physician. Ability to work in rapidly changing environments and confined transport vehicles. Demonstrate flexibility with shift work, standby, on‑call, and extended overtime as needed. Exhibit strong leadership, critical thinking, collaboration, and interpersonal skills. Communicate effectively with patients, families, and other health‑care professionals. Manage competing priorities effectively. Provide oral and written communication skills. Be enthusiastic and innovative. Work independently and as a team member. Commitment to clinical research that supports best practices and evidence‑based protocols. Physical Requirements Environment involves indoor and outdoor work, possible extreme weather, strenuous movements, confined spaces, exposure to sirens, flight noise, and communicable diseases.
