Job Summary & Requirements Working remotely, the Coding Specialist is responsible for the timely and accurate coding and abstracting of patient health and demographic information. As a certified Health Information Management Professional, you must have experience and knowledge of all types of acute care coding and a firm understanding of Canadian Coding Standards. The role requires a working knowledge of the HBAM and Pay-for-Results funding methodologies and adherence to best practice in safeguarding record integrity. Responsibilities Contribute to and impact RVH funding per the Ministry of Health and Long‑Term Care (MOHLTC) funding formula and Health‑Based Allocation Model (HBAM). Support allocation of resource weights to cases. Inform and guide research projects. Determine health‑care needs for the delivery of services in the community. Support obtaining resources for new programs. Complete data for the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), MOHLTC, and Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) in accordance with firm deadlines set by these entities. Education Graduate of an accredited Health Information Management program. Certification with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) in good standing (required). Secondary School Diploma or equivalent. Experience 2 years coding all patient services while applying ICD‑10/CA, ICD‑0, and CCI coding conventions, anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology. Must know hospital funding methodologies (HBAM, QBP, CMG/CACS, RIW, ACW, DPGs, HBAM HIG, and Pay‑For‑Results). 2 years demonstrating application of Health Information Management knowledge to practical work environments. Competencies In‑depth knowledge and understanding of ICD‑10/CA, ICD‑0, and CCI conventions, anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology. Proficiency with electronic abstracting and computer applications (Word and Excel). Experience with Meditech Expanse and Med2020 (asset). Excellent skills for case analysis and interpretation for the ICD‑10 coding classification. Ability to apply quality practices and standards to coding and abstracting. Ability to work independently, prioritize workload, meet deadlines, work effectively under pressure, and exercise good judgement. Familiarity with relevant legislative requirements for the release of personal information (PHIPA, Mental Health Act, Public Hospital Act, Freedom, Coroners Act, etc.). Excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills. Excellent organization and time‑management skills. Demonstrated regular attendance at work.
