Compliance Auditor - Hybrid – Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) Location: Calgary, Alberta Employment Type: Limited Term – 12 months Salary Range: SP3, Level 5, $92,320 – $115,400 per year. Compensation is based on education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity. The Opportunity The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is recruiting a Compliance Auditor to join its Regulatory Compliance Branch. In this role you will work within the Compliance Verification team, conducting routine audits, supporting complex compliance assurance activities on industry operations, and verifying compliance with regulatory requirements. You will gain valuable experience in audit programs focused on closure spend requirements and Water Act reviews. Day‑to‑Day Responsibilities Lead and independently conduct complex audits on operations within the AER’s jurisdiction. Prepare audit plans, collect and analyze information from varied sources to determine compliance and make recommendations for improvement. Prepare audit letters, notice of non‑compliance letters, audit reports, perform follow‑up actions, and execute compliance assurance processes as required. Gather compliance information from industry submissions and internal reports, create summary analyses, and assist with reporting tasks. Follow and support all planning and reporting activities in alignment with AER policies, procedures, the Compliance Assurance Program, and operational plans. What We’re Looking For Degree in engineering, geology, environmental sciences, or related field. Professional certification (e.g., APEGA, ASET, Professional Agrologist) considered an asset. At least 8 years of industry experience in environmental sciences, regulatory compliance, audit, or data analysis. Experience in auditing, compliance assurance, and knowledge of Mandatory Closure Spend Quotas or liability management areas is an asset. Data analysis and database management experience is an asset. Understanding of AER regulatory requirements, including Directive 088, Manual 023, Water Act, and Directive 050, is an asset. Strong oral and written communication skills, attention to detail, and technical accuracy. Ability to work independently and with a team, with strong strategic thinking and planning skills.
