Role OverviewLocation: PHO Timmins Laboratory, 67 Wilson Avenue, Timmins, ONDepartment: Timmins LaboratoryThe RoleProvide technical support for real-time PCR testing within the Virology department and support the Covid response through laboratory operations and real-time PCR setup.Key ResponsibilitiesSet up real-time PCR, including primer and probe stock preparation, under guidance of a Medical Laboratory Technologist or Molecular Specialist.Perform manual or automated extraction of nucleic acids on high-throughput platforms.Operate real-time thermalcycler, extraction platforms, Sanger sequencing, and automated liquid handling systems.Analyze real-time PCR data using vendor thermalcycling software.Provide technical support for validation or evaluation studies.Handle or process human specimens such as respiratory specimens, blood, and urine.Prioritize work and respond to urgent or unpredictable demands.Perform other duties as assigned.Knowledge & SkillsStrong understanding of molecular theory and best practices, including real-time PCR, nucleic acid extraction, primer and probe dilution calculations.Experience with standard molecular lab applications and instrumentation.Familiarity with general laboratory equipment (centrifuges, incubators, pipettors, liquid handlers, biosafety cabinets).Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access.Excellent time management and prioritization.Strong written and verbal communication skills.Comfort with automation and adaptability to changing demands.Knowledge of Sanger sequencing and next-generation sequencing is an asset.Education & ExperienceBachelor of Science (Biomedical Sciences, Molecular Genetics or related field).Minimum of 6 months of real-time PCR experience, preferably in a clinical genetics or molecular genetics laboratory.Attributes & CompetenciesFollow established procedures and SOPs for testing and reagent preparation.Solve basic problems and seek guidance for complex issues.Determine safe handling of organisms based on safety/risk.Lift up to 10 kg and work within a biosafety cabinet or fumehood as required.Perform repetitive tasks such as pipetting and stand or sit for entire shift.Work shifts on a scheduled basis within a hazardous laboratory environment.Adhere to laboratory safety and proper use of personal protective equipment.Employment DetailsDuration: Contract (Fixed Term), 19 monthsHours: Full time, 36.25 hours per weekSalary: $29.16 - $33.29 per hourPosting Date: 11‑14‑2025Closing Date: 11‑29‑2025Application NotesInternal candidates will be considered first.
