Hybrid Work Model

At Assent, we proudly embrace a remote-first work model, valuing the flexibility and autonomy it provides our team. We also acknowledge the intangible benefits of occasional in-person workdays. For team members situated within 50 kms/31 miles of our five global offices in Ottawa, Eldoret, Penang, Columbus, and Amsterdam, you can expect to come into the office at least one day a week. Similarly, those near our co-working spaces in Nairobi and Toronto are encouraged to work onsite once a month.

Job Description

As an Intermediate Data Engineer at Assent, you will be a key contributor in advancing our data engineering practices and serving as a hands-on technical expert. You support the vision and execution of our data engineering efforts, ensuring the development of secure, robust, scalable, and high-performing data platforms. Your role will involve supporting key technical initiatives, collaborating on architectural decisions, and executing complex data engineering tasks to align our data infrastructure with Assent's business goals.

You will actively participate in the design, development, and implementation of sophisticated data solutions while working closely with the other data engineers. Your contributions will have a broad impact across the organization as you work within best practices directly on the technical solutions required to advance our data systems.

Key Requirements & Responsibilities
  1. Support the development of data engineering solutions by contributing to the design and implementation of scalable and high-performing data systems.
  2. Develop and maintain data pipelines and infrastructure, ensuring reliability and efficiency in data processing workflows.
  3. Assist in evaluating and selecting data technologies, infrastructure, and tools, contributing to the implementation of data architectures and workflows.
  4. Follow and apply coding standards and best practices within the Data Engineering & Operations team, participating in code reviews to ensure quality and consistency.
  5. Work closely with database developers, software development, product management, and AI/ML developers to align data initiatives with Assent's organizational goals.
  6. Collaborate with team members to monitor progress, adjust priorities, and meet project deadlines and objectives.
  7. Identify and suggest opportunities for internal process improvements, including automating manual processes and optimizing data delivery.
  8. Expand knowledge and skills by learning from senior team members, sharing insights, and contributing to technical discussions.
  9. Be familiar with corporate security policies and follow the guidance set out by processes and procedures of Assent.

Qualifications

We strongly value your talent, energy, and passion. It will also be valuable to Assent if you have the following qualifications and experience:

  1. 5+ years of data engineering experience.
  2. Proficiency in tools and languages, such as AWS, dbt, Snowflake, Git, R, Python, SQL, SQL Server, and Snowflake.
  3. Effective organizational skills with the ability to manage tasks and communicate technical concepts clearly.
  4. Proficient in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data with attention to detail and accuracy.
  5. Understanding of data management systems, warehouse methodologies, data quality principles, data modeling techniques, and governance best practices.
  6. Familiarity with agile work environments and scrum ceremonies.
  7. Basic business acumen and experience in aligning data initiatives with business objectives.
