We offer an exciting place to build your career with competitive compensation and benefit packages, company matching RRSP/DPSP program, employee home purchase program and employee discounts.Job OverviewReporting to the Design Manager, Star Building Materials, Calgary, as the Designer, Engineered Wood Products, you are responsible for creating the structural framework that supports roofs, ceilings, and walls in buildings. You may work with light metal plate connected wood trusses for roof and floor applications, prefabricated wood I-joists and structural composite lumber (SCL) in an engineered wood products (EWP) design and manufacturing environment.Your Day-to-day Responsibilities Will IncludeManaging design work schedule to ensure jobs are completed on time.Creating computer models using computer-aided design (CAD) software. Developing optimized customer standard models that are cost effective, shop efficient and framer friendly.Reviewing and interpreting customer-supplied documents, such as blueprints or drawings, to identify if any areas require clarification. (Youmay meet with clients to discuss project details and design specifications).Completing fabrication ready designs for residential home structures.Implementing design changes and communicating with other related departments to ensure designs are accurate and consistent.Reviewing constructability of the projects and identify opportunities for value engineering.Preparing fabrication packages for production department, and site packages for installers.Supporting other projects or duties as assigned.Promoting a safe work environment and ensure compliance with Qualico’s Safety Program, policies and procedures.As our ideal candidate, you are…Organized; you effectively manage your time while balancing multiple priorities.A strong communicator; you clearly express your thoughts in conversation and in written communication.An active listener; you seek to understand and listen to others in a non-judgmental way.Detail oriented; you focus on detailed accuracy when dealing with a high volume of work.A team player; you contribute as a team member and share equally in the exchange of ideas, concepts and process outcomes.Essential RequirementsPost-secondary education or technical training courses in Engineering, Architecture or Drafting.Related construction industry experience can be valuable.1 year of drafting and design experience in the construction industry preferred.Proficient in both part 9 and part 4 building codes.Knowledge of building codes, construction methods, design principles, and building materials.Skilled in multiple technical disciplines of roof trusses, floor trusses and i-joists for complex structures.Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.Satisfactory verification of criminal record check.Comfortable using Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Teams, SharePoint, PowerPoint and Excel) drafting and industry design software (Mitek, AutoCAD, Revit, AutoDesk,) or similar.Preferred RequirementsPrevious experience in lumber and building materials industry and having a basic understanding of wood frame construction practices is a strong asset.What We ValueCreating trusting and successful working relationships.Cooperating with team members in an open, positive and respectful manner.Setting clear, measurable and achievable goals.Taking responsibility for the outcomes of decisions and actions.Continuously pursuing learning and growth.Work ConditionsYou primarily work in an office setting during regular business hours.
