Physiotherapy is a professional health discipline primarily directed toward the prevention and alleviation of movement dysfunction to promote maximal independence for the student in his/her home, school, and community. Physiotherapists provide services to children with orthopaedic, neurological, muscular, spinal, or joint dysfunction. These services include assistance in physical positioning to promote optimal physical access, assistance in maximizing independence for students who have limited mobility, and prevention and alleviation of movement dysfunction. The services performed by a physiotherapist in schools may include screening, assessment, consultation, program planning, and assistance in diagnosis, treatment, equipment selection/adaptation, training, and research.
These services may include: consultation for school staff/families; training of staff to carry out routines such as positioning, seating, feeding, or motor activities for optimal maintenance of students in classroom settings during the school day; monitoring and ongoing evaluation of students in classroom settings related to physical therapy. Thorough knowledge of PT techniques and procedures in pediatrics acquired through graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution. Experience working with children, preferably in a school setting. Neuro-Developmental Therapy (NDT) training desirable. Be able to establish positive relationships with the school team, student, and their families. Have a strong, collaborative approach to therapy. Up to date on the most relevant techniques and equipment. Be willing to work as an interdisciplinary team, including CYSN, Northern Health, BCCH, Sunnyhill, and other health-related agencies. Have an understanding of a school environment, and a willingness to learn about education policies, processes, and procedures.
Compensation:
$2000 relocation allowance for teachers from BC, AB and Yukon and up to $4000 for teachers from other areas.
