Lifemark is also a leading provider of Medical Assessments performing independent medical assessments across Canada under the Viewpoint and AssessMed brands. Our fast-growing company is looking for a keen and astute professional to join our team Position Summary: The Occupational Health Medical Director in Canada is a senior medical professional responsible for the strategic oversight and clinical governance of workplace health programs. This includes ensuring compliance with provincial and federal regulations, promoting employee health and safety, managing workplace injury care, and supporting a healthy, productive workforce. The role involves leadership, policy development, and collaboration with HR, safety, and operational leaders. Key Roles and Responsibilities: 1. Clinical Oversight & Medical Leadership Provide clinical leadership to the occupational health team, including nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and administrative staff. Conduct and oversee fitness-to-work evaluations, medical surveillance, and return-to-work assessments. Guide evidence-based care in alignment with the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) and provincial College of Physicians and Surgeons guidelines. 2. Regulatory Compliance Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation specific to each province (e.g., Ontario’s OHSA, Alberta OHS Act). Align practices with standards from the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS). Adhere to Workers’ Compensation Boards (WCB) (e.g., WSIB in Ontario, WCB Alberta, WorkSafeBC) and privacy laws such as PIPEDA and provincial health information protection acts (e.g., PHIPA in Ontario). Prepare for and support audits, inspections, and compliance reviews by regulatory bodies. 3. Workplace Health, Safety, and Prevention Collaborate with joint health and safety committees (JHSC) and EHS professionals to identify workplace hazards and reduce occupational illness and injury. Support compliance with violence and harassment legislation (e.g., Bill 168 in Ontario). Oversee immunization programs (e.g., influenza, COVID-19), ergonomic assessments, and wellness programs. 4. Workers’ Compensation & Disability Management Oversee case management of workplace injuries in collaboration with WCB/WSIB and disability case managers. Provide medical opinions on modified work, functional abilities forms (F AFs), and long-term disability (LTD) claims. Ensure timely documentation and communication with insurers and internal stakeholders. 5. Policy Development & Strategic Direction Develop occupational health policies tailored to Canadian workplace standards. Advise on strategic initiatives such as mental health in the workplace (aligned with CSA Z1003 – National Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace). Participate in pandemic and emergency preparedness planning. 6. Education, Training & Communication Educate employees and management on relevant health topics, including WHMIS, communicable disease protocols, and occupational exposure risks. Deliver training sessions on first aid, health promotion, mental wellness, and early symptom reporting. 7. Surveillance & Reporting Monitor trends in absenteeism, occupational illness, and injury. Analyze health surveillance data (e.g., audiometric testing, spirometry) and make recommendations for risk mitigation. Report to leadership on health indicators and outcomes to inform prevention strategies. Qualifications: Medical degree (MD or equivalent) with licensure from a provincial College of Physicians and Surgeons. Certification in Occupational Medicine or relevant experience in occupational health, minimum 5-7 years' experience. Familiarity with Canadian health and safety laws and workers’ compensation systems. Strong leadership and communication skills. Bilingualism (English/French) may be preferred in certain provinces (e.g., Quebec, federal organizations).
