Intermediate Environmental Planner

About the Role Stantec’s Alberta Environmental Services group is currently seeking an Intermediate Environmental Planner to support all stages of a project’s lifecycle, including assessment, permitting, construction support, and post‑construction support. The work is based in Alberta with flexible and hybrid options available. Key Responsibilities Assess habitat condition within natural environments and conduct or coordinate field surveys. Collect, maintain, and analyze ecological data. Plan and implement ecological restoration projects and park management plans. Coordinate with engineering disciplines and other biological disciplines to prepare deliverables. Work directly with clients to provide strategic environmental advice and project management throughout all stages of a project’s lifecycle within both provincial (AB and BC) and federal regulatory frameworks. Prepare and review environmental evaluations, regulatory applications, and technical submissions. Support and ensure implementation of Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines in the execution of all work and coordinate with HSSE professionals throughout all project phases. Drive project delivery with a key focus on efficient execution, project controls, and safety. Collaborate with environmental and engineering specialists to support the approval and permitting process. Contribute to proposals, pre‑qualifications, and relationship building with existing and prospective clients. Communicate and collaborate with other environmental and regulatory specialists to ensure consistency in project execution. Participate in team and independent work. Engage in on‑the‑job learning and professional development opportunities. Capabilities and Credentials Ability to work with initiative, professionalism, confidentiality, multi‑tasking, and adaptability in a dynamic environment. Strong understanding of provincial (AB, BC) and federal regulations, permitting requirements, and environmental assessment processes. Knowledge of regulatory agencies and legislation, including: City of Calgary, City of Edmonton, other municipalities, AUC, AEP, AER, EPEA, Public Lands Act, Water Act. Strong attention to detail. Effective writing and communication skills. Proven problem‑solving skills and innovative thinking. Committed to delivering quality results in a timely manner. Education and Experience Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in the Sciences, Environmental Studies, or relevant Engineering field. Holding or eligibility to obtain a relevant professional designation (e.g., P.Bio, R.P.F., P.Ag, EP, P.Eng) is preferred but not required. At least 3 years of environmental and regulatory experience in the energy sector (oil and gas, mining, electrical transmission, power generation, energy transition). Previous consulting experience is preferred. Work Environment Depending on the candidate, this role involves a mix of office and field work. Typical office tasks include prolonged use of computers with sedentary periods. Field responsibilities may involve extended working days (up to 12 hours), remote or rural environments, moderately strenuous physical activity, and exposure to inclement weather. Pay Transparency In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location.
