About this OpportunityThis is an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Clinical Nurse Specialist - Neurosurgery at Toronto Western Hospital. As a CNS, you will work in an advanced practice nursing role, demonstrating autonomy and expertise to formulate clinical decisions and care for patients with neurosurgical needs.
Duties- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate treatment goals for patients with neurosurgical needs, focusing on those with facial pain.
- Apply specialized knowledge and expertise to facilitate effective management of clinical activities, coordination of patient care, and continuity in patient care through integrated care strategies.
- Provide patient and family education and nursing care related to diagnosis and treatment plans, ensuring that patients, families, and healthcare providers are informed about ongoing care needs for discharge planning.
- Gather metrics of referrals to and from neurosurgical facial pain clinics, coordinate, triage, and prioritize clinic visits.
- Advise patients on medication management and flare plans, in collaboration with surgical staff.
- Foster a culture of learning, quality, and safety through mentorship, role modeling, and coaching of nursing staff and inter-professional teams to build capacity in managing patients with neurosurgical needs.
- Contribute to developing and refining policies, procedures, and medical directives related to neurosurgery care.
- Participate in research, procurement, evaluation processes, and committees related to the role, as needed.
- Support best available evidence and benchmarks in practice nursing.
- Support quality healthcare through teaching, mentoring, quality monitoring, and program development.
- Initiate and participate in quality improvement and research to expand nursing knowledge and disseminate advances in nursing care.
- Deliver, coordinate, and participate in education with Advanced Practice Nurse Educators and other nursing leaders, including professional development activities.
- Participate in outcome evaluation of nurse-sensitive indicators.
- Current certificate of registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.) program completion, Level II Rescuer certification.
- Master degree in Nursing or recognized equivalent required.
- Subspecialty certification in Neuroscience, High Acuity Nursing Care, and/or Critical Care preferred.
- 3-5 years of nursing experience in neurosurgical or neurosciences programs within an acute care setting.
- Three (3) years of relevant experience, including experience in an advanced clinical practice role, preferably in an acute care and/or neurosciences setting preferred.
- Sound understanding and demonstrated ability to enact the Core Competencies of the CNS framework as outlined by the Canadian Nurse Association related to clinical care, system leadership, advancement of nursing practice competencies, and evaluation and research.

- Experience with Electronic Health Information Systems and Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Visio, and Adobe Pro.
