Sinai Health is looking for a Clinical Nurse Specialist to support our Orthopaedic Oncology department at our Mount Sinai Hospital Campus.
The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Surgical Oncology is an advanced practice nurse who functions in an expanded role within a collaborative practice model. Emphasis will be on working with Oncology patients and their families during their experience at Mount Sinai Hospital and within a multidisciplinary team framework to set patient-related goals and a comprehensive plan of care.
About this team
This is a 30-bed unit providing comprehensive care for orthopedic oncology and trauma patients. The orthopaedic oncology population consists of patients diagnosed with a rare type of cancer called sarcoma. This is the largest multi-disciplinary program of its type in Canada. This program is unique because patients are able to receive all of their cancer care needs on one unit - from diagnosis, staging, to treatment, to cure or palliative care when required. Six beds are allocated to the inpatient administration of chemotherapy to our sarcoma population. Patients are cared for by expert oncology nurses and the allied healthcare team throughout the trajectory of their hospitalization.
The orthopedic trauma population consists of patients who have suffered a fracture. These patients undergo the necessary surgical treatment for their fractures and receive professional and individualized care from the interdisciplinary team throughout their recovery.
In this role you will:
- Demonstrate a comprehensive theoretical knowledge base and advanced level of clinical competence in the care of surgical-oncology critically ill patients.
- Role model and participate in the provision of care to complex families.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of standards of nursing practice through creation of an environment conducive to growth and development of staff.
- Interpret and foster the philosophy, goals and standards of the Department of Nursing.
- Collaborate on the establishment of goals and objectives for the population consistent with the provision of high-quality patient and family-centered care.
- Participate in the programmatic development of the clinical area.
- Play a leadership role, leading quality activities and administrative duties including committee involvement.
- Participate in policy and procedure development.
- Play a leadership role in the collaborative design, implementation and evaluation of information technologies in surgical oncology.
- Perform research activities and promote evidence-based clinical practice.
- Deliver, coordinate and participate in education and professional development activities/programs; perform activities to further develop and strengthen the profession including the supervision of students.
- Develop evaluation strategies related to the Surgical Oncology CNS role.
- Perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.
Job Requirements:
Mandatory
- Current certificate of registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Completion (or in progress) of a Master's Degree Program in Nursing required (Bachelor's Degree in Nursing with a Master's Degree in a related discipline may be considered).
- 5 - 10 years recent experience in Surgical/Oncology Nursing.
- Member of RNAO.
- Eligible for cross-appointment to an academic institution.
