Job Summary

The Lead Certified Animal Trainer – Shelter will oversee the provision of evidence-based case management and care to animals within sheltering programs. This role will assess behaviour modification plans, train staff, and develop educational initiatives.

Job Duties
  • Lead an environment of teamwork and cooperation within the shelter care and training departments.
  • Provide ongoing training, professional development, and mentorship of Certified Animal Trainers and other staff.
  • Develop educational training initiatives, workshops, and resources.
  • Provide evidence-based training and behavior modification intervention plans to staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • Provide behavioral modification training to animals within the care of the Society.
  • Train on enrichment, handling, and behavior modification techniques to volunteers, staff, and members of the public.
  • Maintain accurate animal records.
  • Assist with supervisory health and safety tasks as needed.
Job Requirements
  • CPDT, IAABC, or KPA certification required.
  • Minimum 5+ years animal training experience with complex behaviors.
  • Minimum 3+ years working in a shelter or similar setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with companion animals with various behavioral problems and temperaments.
  • Strict adherence to Positive Reinforcement training and behavior change techniques.
  • Experience creating and delivering behavior modification plans.
  • Ability to stay calm in a crisis and take action.
Work Conditions
  • Flexible hours including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Attendance and participation in training.
  • Operation of desktop computer and peripherals.
  • Extended periods of sitting.
