Job Description: The Senior Accountant works in a team environment preparing assurance, compilation, tax, and other engagement files. The Senior Accountant works under the supervision of a Manager, Senior Manager, or Partner. The Senior Accountant can prepare complex engagement files or participates as part of a larger team completing assigned work. The Senior Accountant can prepare an engagement from start to finish and demonstrate ownership of all assigned engagements. The Senior Accountant effectively supervises Staff Accountants and Intermediate Staff Accountants.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Build rapport/relationship with internal staff and clients and can be the primary point of contact for some clients
  • Works collaboratively with internal engagement teams by communicating level of work assigned and status of jobs to managers and Partners
  • Develops good knowledge and understanding of clients’ operations and their business
  • Responsible for timely completion of work assigned and promptly advises managers/Partner of issues that may result in them going over budget and any issues that could require more resources for planning
  • Assists in supervision of Staff Accountants and Intermediate Staff Accountants
  • Adhering to firm procedures and internal procedures including updating iFirm for timekeeping, job status, and other critical fields
  • Primarily responsible for the completion of engagements such as assurance and compilation engagements
  • Tax preparation including, but not limited to; Personal T1, corporate tax returns (T2s), Charity returns, and other tax filings such as T24s, T5s GST returns
  • Familiar with and attempts tax planning for the client (i.e., salaries, dividends, bonuses, income splitting, timing, shareholder loans, and personal tax planners). Good understanding of basic tax issues

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • A minimum of two years of public accounting experience or other relevant experience
  • Working towards completing or completed a post-secondary certificate, university degree, or CPA designation
  • Develops and enhances relationships by focusing on needs, and builds rapport easily
  • High level of problem-solving and judgment skills to manage client expectations
  • Committed to continuous learning, including questioning, and learning new concepts to be able to apply them in more complex situations
  • Open to ongoing constructive feedback about performance and self-motivated to attain daily, weekly, and monthly goals
  • High level of detail and accuracy required to create more efficiency in work being completed.
  • Ability to work in a deadline-heavy and fast-paced environment
  • Highly proficient in communicating through oral and written communication with internal and external stakeholders
  • Highly organized with ability to prioritize given multiple demands and meet deadlines
  • Ability to embrace change and maintain adaptability
  • Ability to effectively guide and supervise staff and manage conflict
  • Has the confidence of clients and can act as the point of contact for Partners
