Senior Instrumentation and Controls Engineer - Industrial Engineering, Oil and Gas (Calgary, Alberta)
The Senior Instrumentation and Controls Engineer will be responsible for developing and engineering instrumentation and control system designs to support the process design for a project, and to support or proposal consisting of a normal process unit. They will actively participate in the design of different aspects of energy industry projects from inception to completion -- in this posting focused on servicing oil and gas projects. The Senior Instrumentation and Controls Engineer will provide comprehensive engineering and design services by establishing design criteria and preparing specifications, design computations, drawings, models and bills of material in accordance with basic project requirements.
This position requires flexibility in meeting multiple job demands and the requirement to assist other team members on-site as needed. The ideal candidate will have relevant work experience in applying advanced engineering techniques and analyses to complex engineering tasks, ensuring design is in accordance with applicable codes and requirements, including Company and client specifications and standards, combined with good interpersonal/teamwork, organizational, and communication skills, both verbally and in writing. p>SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- 8+ years of progressive experience in energy industry, or facilities engineering and design in the energy industry;
- Preferred: 10+ years of experience as a fully qualified engineer, with 5+ years of experience in the energy industry
- Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in engineering or applied science
- Ability to work and collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team including Process, Mechanical, Civil, Structural & Architectural, Electrical, Instrumentation & Controls and Piping Engineers and Designers as well as Project Management and Procurement personnel
- P.Eng. registration with APEGA
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Strong organizational skills, technical competence and attention to detail
- Self-motivated and efficient in time management
- Strong working knowledge and understanding of applicable codes and industry standards
- Ability to meet safety requirements in order to attend site visits
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Developing and engineering instrumentation and control system designs to support the process design for a project, and to support or proposal consisting of a normal process unit
- Providing comprehensive engineering and design services by establishing design criteria and preparing specifications, design computations, drawings, models and bills of material in accordance with basic project requirements
- Participating in the design of component parts and individual units
- Exercising cost/budget control, and reviewing and monitoring designs for conformance with control estimates and project specifications
- Reviewing and maintaining project schedules, and tracking engineering tasks and deliverables in conjunction with project management
- Supervising the various activities involved in the design of a project consisting of several complex process units
- Performing detailed engineering calculations
- Participating in design reviews and HAZOPs as required
- Providing technical guidance to junior staff
- Interfacing with client representatives
- Maintaining current knowledge of industry and regulatory standards
- Reviewing vendor or subcontractor quotations, drawings, and specifications for technical adequacy and conformance with project requirements
- Applying advanced engineering techniques and analyses to complex engineering tasks
- Adhering to Company Quality Management System (QMS)
- Ensuring design is in accordance with applicable codes and requirements, including Company and client specifications and standards
- Assigning and outlining work for others, and reviewing work for technical accuracy and adequacy
- Actively stewarding change management as related to their scopes of work
- Preparing or assisting in the preparation of discipline inputs for cost estimates for proposals
- Providing construction support
- Authenticating documentation with a professional engineering stamp as required
- Preparing P&ID inputs and providing instrument selection
- Developing and reviewing instrument index, instrument location drawings, in-line and offline instrument datasheets, instrument F&G and analyzer datasheets and inline instrument sizing
- Creating and reviewing I/O lists and assignments, instrument wiring drawings and loop diagrams and instrument UPS load requirements lists
- Preparing material requisitions and technical bid evaluations for field instruments and control systems
- Designing instrument junction boxes and control system (i.e. PLC/DCS/SIS) panels
- Reviewing cable schedules
- Preparing I&C specifications and design criteria
- Preparing shutdown keys and cause and effect diagrams
- Preparing control narratives and providing input to control philosophies
- Designing fiber optic panels and termination drawings
- Designing control system architectures
- Preparing engineering and construction work packages
- Providing technical support to vendors for DCS/SIS/FG panels design and fabrication, and mechanical/electrical equipment
- Performing other duties as assigned
