Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this position provides leadership, management expertise, and policy direction, in collaboration with the Director, Information Technology Services, to align information technology strategies, policies, resource deployments, and plans with the purpose, mission, values and the Education plan of the Calgary Board of Education (CBE).

The Director, Client Technology Services is responsible for several areas:

  1. Creates, resources, and executes the CBE’s Client Hardware and Software Technology Management Strategy.
  2. Leads Client Technology Services teams.
  3. Ensures CBE senior leaders are engaged and informed on educational and client facing technology trends and developments.
  4. Acts as the key contact and resource to the School Improvement service unit regarding end user technology and its applications.
  5. Acts as key contact, on behalf of the CBE, with Alberta Education technology teams.
  6. Participates as a senior leadership member in strategic planning, implementation, and monitoring.

    Strong relationship-building skills are essential for success, as the Director will be responsible for implementing technology standards across the CBE. While a solid understanding of technology is necessary, we need someone who leads first, with technical skills as a secondary strength.

    Client Hardware and Software Management Strategy

    • Works with School Improvement superintendents and education directors to establish technology resourcing needs and strategies across CBE schools and areas.
    • Works with service unit superintendents and directors to set objectives of the client facing technology hardware and Software Strategies in support of student achievement, equity, and well-being and CBE priorities expressed through the CBE’s education plan.
    • Leads the development, implementation, and monitoring of programs and budget in support of the CBE’s technology strategy.
    • In collaboration with the Director, ITS, directs all aspects of the CBE’s technology infrastructure and client facing technology strategies to align with CBE priorities.
    • Directs the CBE’s hardware and software lifecycle management strategies and related asset management.
    • Directs the implementation and ongoing operation of the CBE’s system-wide managed print strategy.
    • Ensures compliance with policies and standards related to client facing technology infrastructure.

    Leadership of Operational Client Technology Support Services

    • Leads, directs, and monitors actions and activities of the Client Technology teams.
    • Responsible for directing the procurement, deployment, monitoring, maintenance, and decommissioning of the CBE’s extensive fleet of client devices across all CBE sites.
    • Recommends the appropriate operational support budget to the Chief Financial Officer to support the CBE’s client technology investment.
    • Leads and directs the setting of standards for vendor operations management.

    Leadership of Client Technology Design and Standards Team

    • Leads, directs, and monitors Client Technology Services operations.
    • Establishes and leads the deployment of the CBE’s software resources.
    • Directs deployment of client facing technology resources across schools, areas, and service units.
    • Directs system-side client facing technology initiatives.

      Education and Experience

      • A baccalaureate degree in business, commerce, or computer science is required with preference for a master’s degree in a related discipline.
      • Ten years progressively more senior leadership experience in an IT environment.
      • Experience in leading large, complex departments and managing staff represented by collective agreements.
      • Experience managing budgets.
      • Experience managing in distributed leadership organizations.
      • COBIT foundation certification.

      • Ability to develop policies and programs to support Educational strategic directions.
      • Ability to build relationships and collaborate with senior cross functional leadership.

      • Knowledge of change management principles.
      • Superior communication, presentation, and writing skills.
