Job Summary

Under the direction of the QA Coordinator, the QA Technician will work with the rest of the Quality Assurance team to regulate all HACCP/SQF standards to ensure product quality and sanitary operations. The Technician is responsible for monitoring the preparation duties and the cleaning procedures in production as well as during sanitation activities. The QA Technician is also responsible for ensuring that inspections during pre-operational or production related activities and policies on product quality and safety meet government/company/customer regulations.

Major Responsibilities - General

  1. Ensure to uphold and follow all HACCP/SQF and good manufacturing practices (GMP’s) standards, including any visitor or contractor on-site;
  2. Perform necessary inspections and complete preparation duties for production to begin;
  3. Follow all company/government/customer policies and regulations in regards to product quality and safety;
  4. Monitor, document and ensure proper procedures are being followed for production and during sanitation activities;
  5. Participate in and adhere to all Health & Safety policies and regulations;
  6. Other duties as assigned.

Major Responsibilities – During Production

  1. Verify and inspect that calibrations and sanitation conducted on equipment/machinery meet government/company/customer regulations;
  2. Monitor, verify, audit, document and report areas where Critical Control Points are in production;
  3. Follow HOLD and TEST procedures monthly according to customer and CFIA specifications;
  4. Perform sampling tests recurrently;
  5. Communicate with internal parties associated with the Technician position on a regular basis.

Major Responsibilities – During Sanitation

  1. Review and observe chemical testing, handling and application to validate compliance against cleaning protocols;
  2. Work with Foreman, Team Leaders and sanitation cleaners throughout the sanitation process to guarantee effective cleaning of all equipment and processing rooms;
  3. Oversee the pre-operational inspections conducted by the contractor and perform independent assessments of their own to validate the effectiveness of the process. Validate the re-cleaning process when non-conformities are observed and ensure elements are corrected prior to the start of operations;
  4. Ensure that the disassembly and assembly of equipment is thorough enough to permit proper cleaning of all operational equipment. Review these processes throughout the course of the sanitation operation to ensure proper care and handling of equipment has been respected to prevent damage to equipment;
  5. Perform TPC (Total Plate Count), ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) and pathogen testing swabs to meet both regulatory and internal sampling requirements for machinery;
  6. Complete all necessary sanitation records and review records completed by the sanitation contractor to validate that they meet program requirements;
  7. Work in conjunction with sanitation personnel to ensure that plant operations commence on time and that information is transferred to key plant personnel (Production Supervisors, Maintenance) when issues arise;
  8. Tours of all areas of premises (inside and out) to ensure building conditions are maintained.

Qualifications and Education Experience

  • University or College diploma in dietetics studies, chemical technology, food transformation or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Two (2) years of relevant experience;
  • HACCP/SQF training completed;
  • Knowledge of the food industry an asset;
  • Good judgement, team player, autonomy, attention to detail;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
