About you: We’re looking for a curious, passionate and driven commercial lawyer, with experience and a strong interest in technology. You have to be ready for lots of contracts, be an effective and confident negotiator, with strong drafting skills and excellent attention to detail. You must have an aptitude for diving into the details of projects, whether it’s data flows in cross-platform product integrations, product development in regulated spaces, or software tools that help us build and operate our platforms. Success on our legal team requires grit, brains, humility and a sense of humor. You also need to be comfortable with being uncomfortable, able to work with many different types of personalities, really connect with people, and work as a team player.

Requirements for the role:

  1. A J.D. or LL.B.
  2. A license to practice law in any common law province in Canada (preferably Ontario and/or Quebec).
  3. Relevant legal experience, ideally having started out at a top-tier law firm, followed by in-house experience.
  4. Substantial experience drafting and negotiating complex legal agreements, such as strategic partnerships, goods and services, software and other licensing arrangements, including those related to SaaS and other cloud-based services, API, fintech, and other technology-related offerings.
  5. Substantial experience providing legal counsel on new product developments, including drafting terms of service and associated policies.
  6. Experience leading and managing projects, and managing multiple priorities, stakeholders and deadlines.
  7. A keen interest in creative legal problem solving, including researching novel and ambiguous areas of law.
  8. Experience managing external legal counsel.
  9. The ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and on an individual basis, without a lot of guidance or oversight.
  10. Exceptional business judgement and relationship-building skills.
  11. Strong written and interpersonal communication skills.
  12. The ability to thrive in a dynamic and entrepreneurial environment.

Bonus experience:

  1. Experience with regulatory law.
  2. Experience with privacy and data issues.
  3. Experience in commercial negotiation and providing product counsel in the technology sector.
  4. Experience with consumer protection, intellectual property, privacy, contest, banking, and marketing and advertising law.
