JOB DESCRIPTION:

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides day to day legal research, counsel and guidance on legal/compliance questions or issues, including conducting training presentations for business units, as necessary.
  • Develops, revises, and maintains insurance policy forms and endorsements for all enterprise product lines.
  • Prepares internal corporate policies and procedures documentation and reviews and/or drafts contracts and legal documents, such as NDAs and vendor agreements.
  • Provides counsel on coverage interpretations to assist Underwriting and Claims with issues raised by external partners or clients and assists with litigation management.
  • Monitors, evaluates and advises business areas regarding federal and provincial/territorial legislative and regulatory activity and industry developments to ensure compliance.
  • Reviews and approves marketing material and risk management presentations and articles ensuring they correctly reflect the product content and comply with all applicable insurance laws.
  • Supports high priority legal and compliance initiatives, including knowledge management, workflow enhancements, and legal expense management initiatives.
  • May perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • In-depth knowledge of the insurance business including product development, underwriting, claim, legal and regulatory.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, negotiation and presentation skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, consultative and communication skills required to interact effectively with relevant business units and external contacts.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment, and to work with and maintain confidential and sensitive information.
  • Proven ability to take a proactive long-term view of business goals and objectives in order to achieve strategic business results.
  • Strong computer skills including strong working knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe and other business related software systems.

Education & Experience

  • Qualified lawyer in good standing with 10+ years’ post-qualification experience (LL.B or JD). In-house experience preferred.
  • Bilingualism (French/ English) is an asset for the role.
