The Dalhousie Gazette is a student-run newspaper based in Halifax, Nova Scotia at Dalhousie
University. We are proud to be the oldest campus paper in North America and have published
consistently since 1868. We publish stories significant to people both on-campus and in the wider
The Dalhousie Gazette Publishing Society is hiring a Sports Editor for the 2024-25 publishing year.
The responsibilities of the Sports Editor are as follows:
1. Accountable for soliciting, managing, reviewing, and editing all content in the
sports section.
2. Managing and maintaining communication with staff and contributors.
3. Recruit contributors and providing coaching and constructive feedback to them
when appropriate.
4. Thoroughly fact-checking and copy-editing all content for your section.
5. Ensure the Gazette is covering as many sports events as possible, and live-tweeted when
appropriate.
6. Engaging in ongoing professional development.
7. Working approximately 20-25 hours per week during the academic year, scheduling and
attending office hours as directed, and being available for communication with staff and
contributors on an ongoing basis.
8. Any other duties determined by the Board of Directors.
The term of the position will be from August 1, 2024 to April 30, 2025. The Sports Editor will be paid
$9,600 per year. Distribution of pay may be subject to change, but the total compensation will
remain the same. Please note that all staff salaries are currently under review by the Gazette Board
of Directors and may be subject to increases if deemed appropriate.
The Sports Editor must:
• Be a student studying at Dalhousie University or the University of King’s College, and a member
of its respective student union.
• Reside in Halifax during the academic year.
• Not be an employee of the Dalhousie Student Union, a member of the Dalhousie Student
Union Council, the Dalhousie University Board of Governors or Senate.
• Preferably have experience writing or working with the Gazette or other student
publication.
• Have an understanding of journalism, the writing process, and Canadian Press Style.
• Preferably have experience leading and coaching others.
